Travel Smart – Gadgets to Make Any Trip a Breeze

Travel in the 21st century is a very different experience to what it was in years gone by, due in no small part to the most inescapable gadget of them all – our smartphones. These devices have removed a lot of the guesswork for travellers, as well as serving as all-round entertainment units for long journeys. Listen to an audiobook, play some games at real money casinos, or catch up on the news; some may argue that a smartphone is the only gadget you really need while travelling.

If you take that approach, then you’d be missing out. There are a ton of excellent and useful gadgets that should be included in any smart traveller’s suitcase or backpack. Here is our pick of the devices that can make any trip smooth, fun and hassle-free.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones

These can be a real life-saver in a variety of situations, especially during long flights or train journeys. They can help you sleep more easily, enhance the sound quality of the in-flight entertainment or simply act as a deterrent to any chatty strangers that you may not want to interact with. Two good choices are the Sennheiser PCX550 or Sony WH-1000XM3, both of which have the option to be wired or wireless.

Portable Charger

That smartphone is just a hunk of useless metal and plastic if you can’t charge it, and when you are travelling you may not always be near an outlet. Portable chargers are the solution, and the type you choose may depend on the type of trip you are taking. For holidays to remote locations, hikes and camping trips, a solar-powered charger may be the answer. The Soluser portable charger is one of the best to be found, and it can provide up to 500 charges from full capacity. For regular portable chargers, Anker has cornered the market with its superior products.

Personal WiFi Hotspot

Another must-have if you want or need to stay connected while you are away is a mobile hotspot. Save money on international data, and connect even if you are far from civilization. The network is also secure, which can’t be said for some public WiFi. Verizon have a good one, and the device from GlocalMe also receives high user reviews. Check if the country you are travelling to is included in the coverage before deciding which to buy.

Compression Packing Cubes

For the organised traveller who wants to make the best possible use of the space in their suitcase, these packing cubes are just the ticket. Simply place your stacked clothes in the cube, and the compression zip will dramatically reduce the size of the pile. These are also perfect for anyone who likes to travel with only carry-on luggage, as you can fit so much more into a small space. The Gonex range are great quality, and the sturdy zips can stand repeated usage.

Waterproof Phone Case

Keep your phone safe and dry under any weather conditions, while still being able to use it. The case adds bulk to your phone, but at some point you’re sure to be grateful that you have it. LifeProof are generally regarded as producing the best and sturdiest cases, although they do come with a rather high price tag. Even so, you can drop your phone down a ravine, and as long as you’re able to retrieve it, a LifeProof case will probably keep it unscathed.

Universal Travel Adapter

You may have had a bad experience with some of the older, badly-made travel adapters that barely did the job they were supposed to do. Thankfully, modern universal adapters are of much higher quality. There are lots of smaller brands that make good products, so check out a couple of reviews, choose one that’s highly rated, and you won’t go wrong.

JOSEPH LOWERY, BARACK OBAMA, MEDAL OF FREEDOM, VAUGHN LOWERY, 360 MAGAZINE

REMEMBERING JOSEPH LOWERY

“When black will not be asked to get in back; when brown can stick around; when yellow will be mellow; when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right.” – Joseph Lowery

Former Co-Founder/President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Rev. Dr. Joseph Echols Lowery, transitioned on Friday, March 27, 2020 at 10pm at the age of 98. He was one of the last remaining leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.

Dr. Lowery has assumed and executed a broad and diverse series of roles over the span of his eight decades: leader, pastor/preacher, servant, father, husband, freedom fighter and advocate. FOX 5 Atlanta pays tribute to Lowery HERE.

In 1997,he was dubbed the ‘Dean of the Civil Rights Movement’ upon receipt of the NAACP’s Lifetime Achievement Award. On January 20, 2009, in his inimitable style; Dr. Lowery delivered the Benediction on the occasion of President Obama’s inauguration as the 44th President of the United States. On August 12, 2009 when President Barack Obama awarded him the nation’s highest civilian honor: The Presidential Medal of Freedom, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to the nonviolent struggle for the causes of justice, human rights, economic equality, voting rights, peace and human dignity.

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, on October 6th, 1921, Rev. Dr. Lowery’s legacy of service and struggle is long and rich. His genesis as a Civil Rights advocate dates to the early 1950s where, in Mobile, Alabama he headed the Alabama Civic Affairs Association; the organization which led the movement to desegregate buses and public accommodations. In 1957, with friend and colleague, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. he was a Co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), where served in an array of leadership positions, including: Vice President (1957-67); Chairman of the Board (1967-77); and as President and Chief Executive Officer from (1977-1998).

In 1961, he was one of four Alabama pastors whose property was seized by the Alabama Courts in an historic, precedent setting libel suit, Sullivan v. NY Times, Abernathy, Lowery, Shuttlesworth, & Seay, because of their civil rights work. The United States Supreme Court vindicated the ministers in a landmark ruling which remains an important element in the protections afforded the free speech rights of the press, and of citizens advocating and protesting for justice and societal change.

In March of 1965, he was chosen by Dr. King to chair the Delegation delivering the demands of the Selma-to-Montgomery March George Wallace, the Governor of Alabama.  As the world witnessed, Wallace ordered the marchers beaten in the incident that came to be known as “Bloody Sunday”, which ultimately led to enactment of the Voting Rights Act.

Throughout his career, Rev. Dr. Lowery’s commitment to human rights and social justice exists on a global scale. His work resulted in the desegregation of Nashville, Tennessee schools, presenting Nelson Mandela with the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Award following his release from prison in 1990, leading a peace delegation to Lebanon and nations in Central America to seek justice by nonviolent means, and securing millions of dollars in contracts for minority businesses in the Southern region of the United States.

His efforts also emphasize the need to uplift and empower historically disenfranchised communities. Ranging from supporting the families affected by the Atlanta “Missing and Murdered Children Crisis” through setting up funds with Citizen Trust Bank, demanding election reform and economic justice as Convener of the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda (GCPA), to advocating for the rights of Black farmers discriminated against by the Department of Agriculture – Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery remains committed to cultivating the Beloved Community and reminds us to “turn TO each other not ON each other!” Ebony Magazine, in recognizing Rev. Dr. Lowery as one of the nation’s “15 Greatest Black Preachers,” described him as the “consummate voice of biblical social relevancy, a focused prophetic voice, speaking truth to power,” and his strong dedication to faith and inclusion is evident in all of his work.

Joseph Lowery had 5 children from 2 separate marriages.

Case Western Reserve University × Free Class

Amid outbreak, Case Western Reserve launches free MOOC: Supporting Entrepreneurship in a Global Crisis

Builds on Beyond Silicon Valley—a free online course taken by 175,000+ students from 190 countries—and offers new content to guide and inspire entrepreneurs during challenging economic times ahead

In the wake of global economic disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak, the Veale Institute for Entrepreneurship in conjunction with the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University is re-launching and updating its massive open online course (MOOC), now called Beyond Silicon Valley: Supporting Entrepreneurship in a Global Crisis.

With new, additional content that responds to the fluid and unique challenges faced by established and fledgling entrepreneurs during this unprecedented economic time, the course will address how startups can survive this developing crisis by drawing on resources from governments, universities, foundations and nonprofit organizations.

“I have already seen initial action being taken in many communities to begin to provide assistance, and I believe it’s incredibly important that we come together to share ideas,” said Michael Goldberg, executive director Veale Institute for Entrepreneurship

“Entrepreneurship is a force that transcends any economic moment—good or bad—and is practiced by people all over the world with a diverse range of backgrounds,” said Goldberg, an associate professor of design and innovation at the university’s Weatherhead School. “We’ll discuss mentoring programs, grants, university support and other opportunities unique to each community.”

Students can register for the course at case.edu/entrepreneurship/beyond-silicon-valley

Launching Monday, March 30, this special cohort of Beyond Silicon Valley will include weekly or twice-weekly live discussions held via Zoom, where students can engage with thought leaders on a range of topics on supporting entrepreneurs in the crisis.  To preview the course, the university has prepared an introductory video for potential students.

The first live Zoom session will focus on the role of government in helping entrepreneurs. The new cohort will draw on lessons in core course videos (with subtitles available in 16 languages), assignments, discussion forums and quizzes. As the course progresses, Goldberg will host weekly sessions on topics covered in the course, with experts and entrepreneurs who can reflect on the crisis—and how the various support mechanisms can help entrepreneurs survive and eventually grow.

“In a time when most teaching and learning is being shifted online as a necessity—and as the global economy is facing new and unprecedented challenges,” said Goldberg, who often advocates for online and remote learning as a contributor for Forbes.  “There’s an opportunity to gather students together, from all walks of life, to learn about entrepreneurship,”

Beyond Silicon Valley was created with generous support from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.

Platinum-certified producer and artist, Rvssian has today released a new song “Only One Team” featuring young hitmakers Lil Tjay and Lil Mosey. The single has all the makings of a hit single with its synth laced beats and Rvssian’s pension for addictive melodies. “Only One Team” is a departure from Rvssian’s usual dancehall and Latin trap sounds but an evolution of the work he’s done following past collaborations with French Montana, Cardi B, 21 Savage and more. NAACP × STIMULUS PACKAGE

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO, made the following statement about Congressional passage of the $2 trillion stimulus package in response to the coronavirus.

“This legislation is a critical step toward addressing the needs of the American people who are most at risk. After much negotiation, the final version resulted in an improved, if incomplete, response to the litany of harms caused by this crisis.

But Congress has much more work to do. The NAACP will continue to advocate for a fair and equitable recovery plan for marginalized and under-resourced communities. In providing future relief, Congress must prioritize people first, not corporations.

Impacted communities will undoubtedly need to receive repeat direct cash payments to help them weather this crisis. From workers who have lost their jobs to small businesses that will be forced to close to students drowning in student loan debt, we must ensure the safety of our communities and economy through cash injections and other forms of support, without stipulation, for those that are suffering. Additionally, our hospitals and health providers throughout this crisis need continued support to ensure all communities receive testing and treatment. We must expand paid family and medical leave for more workers. We must meet the food and nutrition needs of our most vulnerable families through this treacherous time.

Above all, while this bill provides a downpayment to securing our democracy in this time of crisis, we recognize more robust action is required and quickly. The proposal allocates $400 million to protect elections when in reality states need $4 billion — ten times that amount — to ensure secure voting. We should not be forced to choose between our health and our vote. Congress must significantly increase funding to states so they may adopt a variety of measures to administer elections in a safe and accessible manner. Failing to protect our democracy is not an option in this critical election year.

The NAACP urges Congress to begin work on another COVID-19 response package quickly. For the duration of this crisis, we will continue to fight for measures to protect the health, safety and well-being of underserved and overlooked communities.”

Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. You can read more about the NAACP’s work and our five “Game Changer” issue areas here.

AUSTN – Phases

17-year-old singer/songwriter AUSTN returns with an emotionally charged new single called “Phases.” Released via 10K Projects, the sweet and soulful track centers on the showstopping vocal presence he’s previously brought to songs like “In Betweenin’” — a 2019 single that’s amassed over 40.8 million streams Spotify.

Listen to “Phases” by AUSTN HERE

The first release from AUSTN’s upcoming sophomore EP (due later this year,) “Phases” is a real-time reflection on the fast-changing stages of love. With its tender guitar work and understated pop sound, the song is a perfect showcase for AUSTN’s stunning vocal range and heart-on-sleeve songwriting.

Originally from rural Central Oregon, AUSTN began building his vocal skills as a little kid. His natural talent is especially incredible considering that, for the first four years of his life, AUSTN struggled with significant hearing problems — an issue stemming from the fact that the tubes in his ears had closed at birth. After undergoing surgery to restore his hearing, AUSTN kept up with singing, eventually learning to play ukulele and posting his impromptu performances to Instagram.

As he built up a major following, AUSTN relocated to Los Angeles and fully devoted himself to music, quickly finding management and releasing his debut EP Chapter 1: In Betweenin’ in May 2019. Along with greatly expanding his fanbase, the EP’s infectious title track landed on many coveted playlists across Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music, and also found AUSTN featured on Amazon Music’s 2019 Artists To Watch list.

Taking care of your health like a celebrity

Whenever we see a photo of nearly any celebrity, or see someone in a movie or a series, they are usually always at peak physical shape. Granted, most of them have personal trainers and dieticians and some of them even have personal chefs to cater to their nutritional requirements. They do yoga, meditate, and eat right to make sure that they are in top shape for the next role. You can also eat, train, and take care of yourself, your body, and your mind like a true celebrity with these few techniques.

Eating right

The key to having a body and digestive system that functions at an optimal level is proper nutrition and adequate hydration. What we eat greatly impacts how we feel and what we are capable of. The body needs just the right amount of calories and the balance between calories in versus calories out needs to match your goals.

The relationship between macronutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and fatty acids are also important, but the amount you need might depend on the diet you adhere to. For instance, if you are doing a ketogenic diet like mega stars Megan Fox and Halle Berry have reportedly had great success with, then you need to tone down the number of carbohydrates you ingest and up the fatty acids and protein. There is a huge variety of different ways to split your macronutrients, and it is important that you find a formula that works well for your body and schedule.

For the fatty acids, it is important that they come from healthy sources, so that the fatty acids are unsaturated (preferably polyunsaturated) and not saturated or transfatty acids. Unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids can be found in nuts, fatty fish such as salmon and herring, and avocado. Saturated fats are generally found in fast food and fried food and should not make up the main part of your diet.

As far as the protein goes it is also important that it comes from solid and healthy sources such as beans and legumes and lean meat such as fish and chicken. The majority of your carbohydrates should come from wholegrain sources of rice, pasta, potatoes and various vegetables. Make sure you drink plenty of water, as water is key to maintaining a healthy body and getting enough sleep. Incorporate lots of different vegetables and fruits into your diet. Basically, if you want to eat like a celebrity, you have to develop clean eating habits.

Calm your mind and body with meditation

Meditation is highly popular within Hollywood – probably because of the high stress working environments and busy schedules. Stars like Katy Perry, Scarlett Johansson, Russell Brand, and Brad Pitt all like to take time out of their busy days to just sit and be. Meditation is a great way to unwind and let your thoughts flow and your body relax. Meditation relaxes, refreshes, and recharges your body and soul, as well as decreasing stress symptoms, allowing for a calmer and more relaxed you.
If you are new to meditation, there are a bunch of great apps out there, such as the Keep app (which also has a great yoga section), Calm, and Buddhify. These apps offer guided meditations of varying lengths, which can be great if you are just starting out. There might also be meditation classes available in your area that you can join.

Get toned and flexible with yoga

Yoga has been around for centuries, but has recently gained a revival and is now being utilized by literally everyone from Jennifer Aniston, who practices yoga to stay in shape and stay flexible both for movies and personal gain, to pro poker players such as Celina Lin, who uses yoga to relax after high stress tournaments. Pretty much all of the Kardashians do yoga, and so do busy CEOs, who takes 20 minutes out of his schedule every day to stretch. Even stars like famous footballer David Beckham, actor Matthew McConaughey and top model Gisele Bundchen implement yoga into their daily routine to stay healthy, lean, and flexible.

Yoga is for everyone, everywhere, and anytime. It gives you that space of solitude and peace whether you have a whole hour at your disposal or only 5 minutes in a hectic afternoon.
There are so many different versions of yoga, but they are all highly beneficial for your body and mind. See if there are any classes in your area and try a few different types out to discover what suits you the best. Yoga is great for increasing flexibility and muscle tone, and for calming your mind and body, and just like meditation, there are a lot of really great apps for yoga beginners to help you get started.
