The Dalai Lama – Inner World

It has been announced that Khandro Music will release a unique album of mantras and teachings by The Dalai Lama set to music, entitled Inner World. Released to honor his 85th birthday celebrations on July 6th, 2020, the album will be a dedication to the decades of his vision and work for world peace and educating the heart.

Inner World is an offering of the Dalai Lama reciting mantras and giving short teachings all woven to a bed of music. The album will be released in conjunction with a companion booklet, revealing the benefits of the mantras written by Venerable Robina Courtin, and exclusive artwork; a collaboration between the acclaimed New Zealand duo of Ella Brewer (classically trained Thanka Painter) and Tiffany Singh (an award-winning visual artist).

“Music has the potential to reach many more people with the message that the real source of happiness is warm-heartedness and a concern for others” The Dalai Lama said. When asked why he accepted the request to make the album, he answered, “The very purpose of my life is to serve as much as I can. Music can help people in a way that I can’t.”

On top of the album announcement, “Compassion,” the first track from the album, was released today. “Compassion” sets the tone of the album by cultivating love and empathy for ourselves and all beings. Reciting the mantra of the Buddha of Compassion (known in Tibetan as Chenrezig and in Sanskrit as Avalokiteshvara) is said to open our hearts and bring us closer to others, to feel love and compassion through wisdom, generating a desire to help.

The road to the release of Inner World began in 2015, when one of the project’s co-executive producers and a longtime student of The Dalai Lama, Junelle Kunin, wrote to him requesting his participation, by fervently explaining her feelings that an album by such a compassionate and wise being would help people particularly who struggle with emotional stress. After reading her letter, his response was enthusiastic, saying, “This will benefit many people!”. She and her husband Abraham Kunin, both from New Zealand, spent the next five years working with a small team to bring the project to life.

The Dalai Lama’s recordings have been thread through music composed by Abraham and performed on thirty-plus instruments by himself and a cast of collaborators from around the world, including a special guest performance from Anoushka Shankar on “Ama La.” The composer integrated the live performances with artful programming and production, building a peaceful bedrock for these sacred offerings.

Net proceeds from the sales of Inner World will go to The Gaden Phodrang Foundation of the Dalai Lama (Switzerland) chosen program: Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning), an international K-12 education program and part of an academic collaboration between Emory University and His Holiness; and Mind and Life Institute, which brings science & contemplative wisdom together to better understand the mind & create positive change in the world.

Poor People’s Campaign Digital Assembly

On June 20th Poor People’s Campaign digital mass assembly, people from more than 40 states suffering from poverty, COVID-19 & police brutality to tell their stories & demand moral agenda.

Poor and low-income people of every race, creed, color and sexuality from more than 40 states will demand change as they share stories of struggling through poverty and protests for racial justice at a historic digital assembly and march sponsored by The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival.

Hundreds of mobilizing partners — including 14 national unions, 16 national religious denominations and dozens civil rights organizations — will join the campaign for the Mass Poor People’s Assembly and Moral March on Washington.

The assembly and march will be aired at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, June 20, and at 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, June 21. It can be viewed at june2020.org, and MSNBC will livestream the entire event, as will other local and national media.

“When we began organizing the poor people’s assembly and march two years ago, we knew 140 million people — 43% of the nation were poor or low-income and that 700 people died each day — or 250,000 a year — from poverty,” said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, president of Repairers of the Breach and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign.

“We knew racist voter suppression was blocking voters from casting their ballot and blocking progressive policy decisions. We knew over 80 million people were uninsured or underinsured and millions were homeless and without clean water. And we knew that we had a war economy with a gross and unnecessary budget. We knew all of these realities are morally indefensible, constitutionally inconsistent and economically insane, undermining our national health. And then a pandemic hit and exposed the wounds of racism and poverty, and a lynching by police of a black man on camera poured salt in the wound, which makes our call for a moral fusion coalition of all people to address five interlocking injustices even the more relevant,” said Rev. Barber, a bishop and pastor of Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

Former Vice President Al Gore and other young climate activists will introduce those testifying about the effect of ecological devastation on their lives.

Actors and activists such as Erika Alexander, Danny Glover, David Oyelowo, Jane Fonda, Wanda Sykes and Debra Messing will introduce testifiers and invite Americans and people around the world to tune in.

“The numbers of people suffering in this the richest nation in the world is already increasing and deepening as the effects of the pandemic, recession and racist and anti-poor policies continue to hurt poor and low-income people the hardest,” said Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign.

“On June 20th, poor and impacted people will come together to tell the nation what it means to not have enough food to eat, to wonder how to keep a roof over your family’s head, and to have to choose between risking your life by going to work or staying at home and not getting paid. We will share the bold and visionary demands people are putting forth that can solve these grave injustices and the powerful and creative resistance of people organizing across the country. History shows that when those most impacted by injustice come together in a powerful movement, that this country can indeed change for the better. Those whose backs are against the wall are pushing this whole nation towards justice today.”

The campaign notes that the day’s focus will be on poor and low-income people who demand that their voices be heard. These people from 43 states — white farmers and coal miners standing with black women Latino meat packers, First Nation Apaches and Asian people — will tell the pain of their stories and demand a specific policy, moral budget and political agenda. That agenda includes a demand that the nation address the five interlocking injustices of systemic racism, systemic poverty, ecological devastation, the war economy and militarism and a distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism.

Among the impacted people who will speak are service workers from the Midwest who have worked through the pandemic without PP; families hurt by police brutality; a coal miner from Appalachia; mothers who have lost children due to lack of health care, residents of Cancer Alley in Louisiana, and an Apache elder who is petitioning the federal government to stop a corporation from destroying a sacred site in Arizona.

The assembly and march are being held in the wake of protests spurred by the death of George Floyd, who died on Memorial Day as a Minneapolis police officer held his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. His cry of “I can’t breathe” echoed that of Eric Garner, who died in 2014 when a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold. It followed those of Breonna Taylor, who was shot eight times by officers who invaded her apartment in Kentucky with a battering ram, and Ahmaud Arbery, who was killed by two white joggers who weren’t charged until a video emerged.

The campaign’s leaders decided at the end of March to hold a digital assembly and march because of the pandemic rather than gathering in person in Washington, D.C. Amidst protests that are happening in every state, this digital mass assembly presents an opportunity for all Americans to join together in a united call for justice from wherever they are.

What’s in a name? Watch as rescued dolphin at Clearwater Marine
Aquarium selects the name of his new companion.

Public submitted 12,000 names, Nick the dolphin made the final pick Clearwater Marine Aquarium, home to the Dolphin Tale stars Winter and Hope, has a new resident dolphin! Selected by National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to be the forever home, the new male dolphin is a companion for CMA rescued resident Nicholas, another male Atlantic bottlenose dolphin.

CMA asked the public for its help in naming the dolphin. Within a week, CMA received 12,000 name submissions! The Animal Care team selected their top two favorite names for the new resident. However, to make the final pick, CMA asked for the help of Nicholas. Nick is known for accurately predicting the winners in sports matches. In fact, he has accurately predicted 9 out of 16 sports match-ups – most recently predicting the Kansas City Chiefs to win the 2020 Super Bowl.

How it worked: Nicholas was presented with the two final names, Finn and Hemingway, written on volleyballs. Ultimately, he made the final selection by picking the volleyball with ‘Hemingway’ written on the ball! CMA invited the public to view Nick’s Pick via Facebook Live.

About Nicholas:

Nicholas is a rescued bottlenose dolphin that was found stranded with severe sunburns. He was orphaned and unable to learn necessary survival skills as a calf, therefore he became a permanent resident at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Nicholas is presented with a choice during his normal enrichment activities. Making unbelievable sports predictions is just one of Nick’s many talents he has demonstrated.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s resident dolphin, Nicholas, chose to name his new rescued companion ‘Hemingway.’

About Hemingway:

In July 2019, the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin stranded in shallow waters off Fiesta Key, Fla. When he was rescued, Hemingway was weak and was found to have severe pneumonia. After several weeks of treatment, his health improved but further testing indicated he had hearing loss.

Due to his ongoing health issues and hearing loss, NMFS ultimately determined the dolphin was not a candidate for release.

IAITAM Opportunities

IAITAM: ORGANIZATIONS FLOODED WITH NEW TECH PURCHASED FOR WORK-FROM-HOME EMPLOYEES FACE UNIQUE “ASSET REFRESH” OPPORTUNITY.

IT Asset Management (ITAM) Strategies Can Turn Excess Hardware Hurriedly Snapped Up During the Pandemic By Companies, Agencies Into Cost-Saving Resources.

As COVID-19 spread and Americans were forced to shelter-in-place, the month of March saw U.S. sales of computers increased by 40 percent, notebook sales by over 50 percent and keyboard sales by 64 percent.

With many workers now returning to the office, companies and government agencies are going to be forced to deal with a mountain of new equipment purchased for the work-from-home period. The International Association of IT Asset Managers (IAITAM) is encouraging organizations to look at this situation as an opportunity, rather than as a headache.

In recent weeks, IAITAM has issued numerous warnings to businesses and government agencies on the “nightmare data risks”, tech headaches and challenges associated with transitioning to work-from-home arrangements, especially with an influx of new technology purchased for employees working remotely.

Now, as many workers begin returning to the office, IAITAM is outlining a strategy for companies and government agencies to turn their rushed and often costly technology purchases into a return on investment (ROI) through a technique called “asset refresh.”

An industry survey from the Evaluator Group notes that many organizational technology managers were caught in react mode by the pandemic, unprepared for the scale of workforce displacement.

While some companies might look to dispose of unnecessary assets or donate excess hardware to charities, there is another path forward in considering whether to move up the technology “asset refresh” cycle. IAITAM sees a huge opportunity for organizations to strategically replace outdated and otherwise inferior equipment in the pre-coronavirus office setting with new hardware that was purchased so that employees could work from home.

Dr. Barbara Rembiesa, president and CEO of IAITAM, said: “The coronavirus pandemic has provided an unprecedented occasion for businesses to update their technology inventory with a strategy called ‘asset refresh.’ Many businesses made purchases that they were not preparing for, in haste, to accommodate a remote workforce. Coming out of the pandemic, with a tight budget, there are questions you can ask to address the financial bottom line of IT investments. Do you have a plan in place for turning these new technology assets into a return on investment? If not, this is the time to stop reacting and start planning.”

When unnecessary assets are added to the organization, time and money is wasted. Under normal circumstances, a carefully researched acquisition plan is created before any hardware/software purchases are made by an organization following proper ITAM procedures.

It is the role of IT Asset Managers to evaluate “asset refresh cycles” and the lifecycle of an IT inventory. The goal for Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) within ITAM is to calculate or estimate the costs associated with an asset throughout its whole lifecycle (encompassing acquisition, use and disposal).

Sometimes it is more costly to maintain old machines and software than it is to upgrade. In other cases, it is more cost-effective to update old IT assets instead of replacing with new ones, due to hidden costs. Rembiesa said:

“In returning to business as usual companies and government agencies will need to closely evaluate their technology inventory and decide where to cut costs or avoid hidden fees associated with new purchases. It is likely that a newfound emphasis will remain on asset mobility, remote workforces, cloud services and data protection. Therefore, having an IT asset professional in your pocket, a strong ITAM program, a plan for IT asset acquisition/disposal, and strategies for generating ROI with IT assets will be vital for business owners to help recoup revenue lost during the pandemic.”

IAITAM President and CEO Dr. Barbara Rembiesa recently discussed how IT asset management factors into return on investment and simple ways that companies can save millions.

After exploding on Shazam and TikTok, genre-bending track “August” has been on a steady organic rise, and it seems that nothing can stop this unique blend of infectious melodies and melancholia from becoming a worldwide smash. In Russia alone, the song has shot to #1 on Shazam Russia Chart, #1 on Apple Music Russia Top Songs, with consistent visibility on a range of other charts. “We make music for people who are tired of clichés and predictable formats,” the band comments on its self-described technoblues genre.

The Mavericks x “En Español” Album

Following the recent success of their extensive 30th-anniversary world tour, the genre-bending, multi-platinum selling Mavericks are adding a new career milestone, while also coming full-circle to their early Miami roots with today’s announcement of the band’ upcoming first Spanish language / Latin music album.

Set to be released on August 21st, “en Español” will present a collection of new songs written in Spanish, and their unique take on classic tracks that long inspired the Grammy, ACM, and CMA-award winners to make Cuban, Tejano/Tex-Mex and additional Latin rhythms from their heritage such an integral part of the Mavericks’ distinctive style and the foundation of earlier projects such as the “Havana Time Machine” documentary with PBS.

“This is the record I’ve been wanting the Mavericks to make for a very long time. I’m a first-generation Cuban-American, and some of these songs are songs my family would play and sing on weekends at family parties and get-togethers. But it’s not all nostalgia either. There are plenty of new original songs that put this record squarely in the moment for us.”

– Raul Malo of The Mavericks

Produced by the band’s longtime creative partner Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Prince, Sheryl Crow) and Mavericks lead singer & principal songwriter Raul Malo, “En Español” will be released by the band’s own Mono Mundo Recordings, supported by Thirty Tigers. The Mavericks are also joined once again by their Fantastic Five sidemen – along with special contributions from longtime collaborators, such as Grammy-winning keyboardist and arranger Alberto Salas and Tejano accordion legend Flaco Jiménez.

This Friday, June 12th will see The Mavericks provide fans and the Latin Music world a first taste of the “En Español” album with the release of the first single and video “Poder Vivir” (‘To Live’). The full album will also become available for pre-sale, with the track listing to be revealed, and the band will be the headline guests of the long-running Latin Alternative Music Conference and Celebrate Brooklyn’s special digital music performance block. DWELLoptimal LAUNCHES SECURE REAL ESTATE SOLUTIONS FOR CORPORATE TRAVEL IN POST COVID-19 ERA

Delivering Tech-Enabled, Secure Live|Work Environments that Cater Specifically to the Needs of Business.

As the country begins to re-open, questions and concerns abound for businesses that rely on corporate travel. Managing the needs of business travelers in a post COVID environment presents companies with a new array of challenges, and the notion of secure travel is now suddenly in focus.

DWELLoptimal, which officially launches in the summer of 2020, is attempting to solve the problem of secure real-estate for business travel. DWELL accomplishes this by providing dedicated live|work apartments – optimized for remote work, and exclusively provided to companies only.

The backdrop for business travel was in the midst of an evolutionary shift prior to COVID 19. Within the industry, the traditional hotel space was feeling the disruptive effects of a growing STR market (short term rentals), which was ushered in nearly 12 years ago by Air BnB. According to a recent CBRE report, STR’s now represent nearly 10% of total U.S. Hotel supply and amassed over $119 Billion in revenues in 2019.

What was once considered an ancillary product is now becoming a preferred typology – according to Craig James, founder of DWELLoptimal. “Hospitality maps were already changing dramatically before COVID-19, but the onset of this health crisis changes the priorities of business travelers in a permanent way. The crowded lobby bar is suddenly less appealing.”

As a start-up that was designed specifically for business, DWELLoptimal delivers secure live|work apartments that optimize employee productivity and well-being.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, James points out that DWELLoptimal was thoughtfully designed to promote health and well-being with intentions such as a ‘no touch’ check-in process, keyless entry, low-to-no touch integrated groceries, customizable in-unit exercise, and industrial cleaning and sanitization options. These features come standard for Dwell units along with dozens of other customizations that uniquely position Dwell to respond to these new realities.

PARTNERING WITH BUSINESS

Differentiating itself in an increasingly crowded landscape of branded accommodations, DWELLoptimal partners with companies to deliver entire portfolios of live|work apartments, in locations companies actually elect themselves. In describing the business model, founder Craig James describes it simply – “We start with asking companies the outrageous question: What
do you want? and where do you want it?  And then we deliver that.”

DWELLoptimal then provides their corporate clients with an integrated software platform for managing utilization, controlling unit environments remotely, and allowing employees to “drive experience” of their live|work spaces. “We’re one of the first to deliver truly customizable experiences – down to the Kiehl’s soap in the bathroom” says James.

AN EVOLUTION DRIVEN BY TECHNOLOGY

While the corporate apartment concept has been around for decades, innovations in Iot and platform technology have brought it into a new era.

“It is a critical juncture”, says Luke Bujarski, founder and managing director of Luft Research & Advisory. “Technology will separate the winners and losers as this industry consolidates,” he predicts. “Technology is the enabler of smart property management and customer acquisition and retention.”

Creation of optimized living solutions, James notes, can’t happen without effective technology. “At our core, we want to power the productivity of the employee,” James says. “And that starts with utilizing technology to eliminate travel friction in all the obvious ways. With instant Wi-Fi connections, Zoom conferencing and Slack integrations, we’re utilizing our platform to actually give time back to the mobile employee.”

Ease-of-use is also an important part of the equation, which is guided by an elegant application interface. “In business travel, mobile professionals prioritize the overall tenant experience, which includes fitness, nutrition and wellness,” James says.

That kind of customized experience is designed to keep increasingly mobile employees functioning at a high level – and keep them onboard.

“We see secure real estate as an offensive strategy designed to attract and retain employees,” James says. “Why wouldn’t you give your employees access to the most productive and secure environments you can?”

About DwellOptimal

DWELLoptimal is a real estate technology company that provides a new standard in productivity-focused design for extended stay business travelers. Unlike most companies currently in the serviced apartment space, DWELL is focused exclusively on business travel on behalf of its corporate clients.

DWELLoptimal provides their corporate clients with an integrated software platform for managing utilization, controlling unit environments remotely, and allowing employees to customize elements of their live|work spaces.

Lab Improves 4D Printing

Rice advances manufacture of complex shapeshifters for soft robots, biomedical implants. Soft robots and biomedical implants that reconfigure themselves upon demand are closer to reality with a new way to print shape-shifting materials.

Rafael Verduzco and graduate student Morgan Barnes of Rice’s Brown School of Engineering developed a method to print objects that can be manipulated to take on alternate forms when exposed to changes in temperature, electric current, or stress. The researchers think of this as reactive 4D printing. Their work appears in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces.

They first reported their ability to make morphing structures in a mold in 2018. But using the same chemistry for 3D printing limited structures to shapes that sat in the same plane. That meant no bumps or other complex curvatures could be programmed as the alternate shape.

Overcoming that limitation to decouple the printing process from shaping is a significant step toward more useful materials, Verduzco said.

“These materials, once fabricated, will change shape autonomously,” Verduzco said. “We needed a method to control and define this shape change. Our simple idea was to use multiple reactions in sequence to print the material and then dictate how it would change shape. Rather than trying to do this all in one step, our approach gives more flexibility in controlling the initial and final shapes and also allows us to print complex structures.”

The lab’s challenge was to create a liquid crystal polymer “ink” that incorporates mutually exclusive sets of chemical links between molecules. One establishes the original printed shape, and the other can be set by physically manipulating the printed-and-dried material. Curing the alternate form under ultraviolet light locks in those links.

Once the two programmed forms are set, the material can then morph back and forth when, for instance, it’s heated or cooled.

The researchers had to find a polymer mix that could be printed in a catalyst bath and still hold its original programmed shape.

“There were a lot of parameters we had to optimize — from the solvents and catalyst used, to degree of swelling, and ink formula — to allow the ink to solidify rapidly enough to print while not inhibiting the desired final shape actuation,” Barnes said.

One remaining limitation of the process is the ability to print unsupported structures, like columns. To do so would require a solution that gels just enough to support itself during printing, she said. Gaining that ability will allow researchers to print far more complex combinations of shapes.

“Future work will further optimize the printing formula and use scaffold-assisted printing techniques to create actuators that transition between two different complex shapes,” Barnes said. “This opens the door to printing soft robotics that could swim like a jellyfish, jump like a cricket or transport liquids like the heart.”

Co-authors of the paper are Rice graduate student Seyed Sajadi; Shaan Parekh, a student at John Foster Dulles High School in Sugar Land, Texas; Rice research scientist Muhammad Rahman; and Pulickel Ajayan, chair of Rice’s Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering, the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering and a professor of chemistry. Verduzco is an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of materials science and nanoengineering.

The Welch Foundation for Chemical Research and the Army Research Office Chemical Sciences Division supported the research.

  • Employees will be required to wear masks; Guests are strongly encouraged to wear masks, and in some settings where physical distancing is more difficult and/or barriers do not exist, will be required to do so. Examples of where masks will be required include salons, table games where physical barriers are not in place and elevators, if riding with guests outside of their travel group. Masks will be provided, free of charge
  • A physical distancing policy will be implemented, with floor guides serving as reminders
  • For areas where physical distancing presents challenges, plexiglass barriers will be installed, or other measures will be used to reduce risks
Standalone handwashing stations designed by MGM Resorts conveniently located on casino floors
  • Contactless Check-In through the MGM Resorts App allows hotel guests to go through the check-in process on their personal devices, minimizing interactions
  • Guestroom Attendants wear masks and gloves while cleaning each room and will change gloves between guestrooms
  • In addition to increased and enhanced routine cleaning of guestrooms and public spaces based on CDC guidance, electrostatic sprayers are utilized in many large public spaces so that disinfectant is applied efficiently
  • Digital menus are available to view on personal mobile devices via QR codes in the company’s food and beverage outlets
  • To minimize groups congregating while they wait, restaurant guests will receive text message notification when their tables are ready
MGM has compiled its own internal team and processes to respond if a guest or employee tests positive for COVID-19. We ask that if a guest tests positive after visiting one of our properties, they alert us through a special email address. We will immediately report any positive test results to the local health department and assist with contact tracing to support the health department investigators.
