Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. According to AAA, more than 41.5 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend by car, plane, or train. Nothing ruins a long-awaited vacation faster than getting sick or being in medical distress. We turned to Dr. Niket Sonpal, an NYC internist and gastroenterologist for some tips on how to avoid health consequences will traveling.
Avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with no symptoms. For travelers, this can happen on long haul trips where you are not moving. Dr. Sonpal recommends if you are flying or on a train, to move around the cabin to get the blood flowing in your legs. If you are driving, take a break at a rest stop and walk around. Compression socks are also another option to prevent DVT.
Don’t Get Nauseous
People can experience motion sickness on virtually any mode of transportation. To combat this, Dr. Sonpal suggests Dramamine® Non-Drowsy Naturals, Dramamine®’s first non-drowsy formulation. It contains the clinically tested ginger dosage required for preventing and treating motion sickness. Other sources of ginger, including candies, gums, or ginger ale, may not contain a full clinical dose. For someone who is already experiencing nausea while traveling, it is a good idea to keep Emetrol on hand which is an over the counter nausea medication that does not cause drowsiness.
Avoid Bloating on a Plane
If you get gassy on a plane, you’re not alone! Dr. Sonpal explains that, “As the pressure around you decreases, the gas in your belly isn’t constrained as much and it expands. This can make you feel bloated or become distended.” It is essential to avoid foods that cause gas or have salt. Skip the tomato juice in flight and stick with non-carbonated water. Avoid alcohol, cruciferous vegetables, dairy and high sodium snacks such as salted peanuts or pretzels. Foods that are protein packed, magnesium-rich and high in Vitamin C are good options.
Sanitize Your Surfaces
Planes and trains are a breeding ground for illness. The former is awful due to re-circulated air. Most travelers would be appalled if they really knew how germy their tray tables are! Dr. Sonpal suggests sanitizing wipes for your tray table, seat belt clip and hand rests of your seats on planes and trains. When you exit a restroom on a plane or train and touch the door handles, be sure to use hand sanitizer even if you already washed your hands.
Get Your Shots Before Traveling Abroad!
Before you even book your trip, make sure you’re up to date on your shots. If you’re traveling to an area where you’re at risk for picking up an illness like malaria, you might be prescribed preventative medication. Dr. Sonpal suggests that, “People should use the CDC website for recommended vaccines for travel abroad or see a travel clinic. The health risks posed to Americans vary based on the country they are traveling to.”
Don’t Touch the Ice!
When traveling to a different country, most people are very cautious about only drinking bottled water. Many folks forget that ice is simply frozen water and put it into their soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. Contrary to what one might think, freezing water does not kill bacteria. The only way to be sure it is safe is if you boiled the water and then froze it.
Avoid Jet Lag
Even a relatively short time change from EST to PST (3 hours) can cause jet lag. With some international travel from the United States, the time difference can be as much as twelve hours. If you’re traveling east, try going to bed one hour earlier each night for a few days before your departure. Dr. Sonpal suggests that, “If you’re traveling east, try going to bed one hour earlier each night for a few days before your departure. Go to bed one hour later for several nights if you’re flying west. If possible, eat meals closer to the time you’ll be eating them at your destination. Set your watch to the new time before you leave. Once you reach your destination, try not to sleep until the local nighttime, no matter how tired you are.”
Essential Medicine/Supplies to Travel
Dr. Sonpal stresses never to check your medication with your baggage, always keep it in your carry on. Have a fresh re-fill on prescription medication with extra doses in case you get stuck at your destination. In addition, here are some essential over the counter meds/supplies to travel with:
Benadryl- For allergic reactions such as insect or bee bites.
Pepto Bismol- For diarrhea
Laxative such as Dulcolax
Anti-biotic ointment such as Neosporin
Common cold/sinus remedies such as Mucinex or Claritin
Pain relievers such as Tylenol or Motrin
Anti- Nausea medication such as Emetrol
Motion Sickness medication such as Dramamine. If you are the driver, be sure to take the non-drowsy version.
Electrolyte tablets for dehydration
Hydrocortisone cream to relieve itching from rashes, bites, poison ivy etc.
Aloe to soothe sunburned skin
Band-Aids
Digital Thermometer
Nasal Spray to prevent clogged ears while flying
Tweezers
Eye Drops
Epi-Pen if you are prone to severe allergic reactions
How to Find a Reliable Physician if you are Traveling Abroad
The US embassy in your destination country (http://www.usembassy.gov/) can help you locate medical services and will notify your family and friends in the event of an emergency. When selecting a doctor, make sure that I he or she can speak your language. The following resources provide lists of doctors and clinics that can care of travelers:

We sometimes cover destination-specific travel guides, but every now and then it helps to think of things more generally also. To that point, we’re devoting this post to the actual planning process that goes into travel.
Location is ultimately the most important thing when you plan a trip, and we’ll speak some to that as well. But even once you choose a destination, there are a few things you’ll need to look into and plan for in advance in order to ensure the smoothest and most enjoyable possible getaway. For instance, it is imperative to choose somewhere suitable for everyone travelling with you. This means taking into account their interests and hobbies; fans of the snow and skiing can consider Tamarack ski resort for a fun filled vacation during the winter time.
To that point, here are just a few things to keep in mind the next time you’re planning a trip.
Reserve Events Ahead of Time
When booking a trip, one pitfall too many people fall into is thinking that big attractions and events will be freely available. More often than not, the opposite is true. For instance, when taking a trip to Italy, you’d probably want to head up into the Leaning Tower of Pisa, right? Well, if so, you’d better reserve your tour early, because reservations to go inside can get backed up for months at a time! It’s just one example, but it shows that taking specific events or attractions for granted can lead to a partially wasted vacation.
Have Plans For Everyone Going
If you’re traveling with a group, it’s important to make sure that the location you choose has something for everyone. Consider the ever-alluring Atlantic City as an example. Visiting A.C. to enjoy its bountiful casino scene, recently reinvigorated by the success of online casinos, sounds great for a party of adults. For a whole family though, no number of slots or poker tables would keep everyone happy were it not for the other attractions at Atlantic City/s resorts. Someone in your group is going to want to do something else. Basically, this is to say that even if a destination is known for one particular thing, it pays to make sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Be Open to New Experiences
It’s always a good idea to plan on new experiences. Each and every destination has its own delicacies, traditions, and more that should enrich the travel experience. For instance, if you visit Costa Rica, try zip lining above a rainforest; if you go to Spain, try some local tapas. You should go into every trip prepared to have these kinds of experiences, even if this sort of planning is more about mindset than logistics.
These are just a few simple tips, but if you follow them, we’re betting you’ll truly get the most out of your upcoming trips. Some extra planning up front, or even a small shift in your mindset. will pay off later on. Keeping just these little things in mind can result ini some of the best trips of your life.
For years people have probably asked and wondered, whatever happened to Kyla Pratt? She’s right here and apparently she’s all grown up!
Most of us remember Kyla from Disney’s first animated series, “The Proud Family,” where she was best recognized as the voice of ‘Penny Proud,’ and as Breanna Latrice Barnes in UPN’s hit series “One on One.”
After playing the daughter of Eddie Murphy’s character in the films Dr Dolittle and Dr. Dolittle 2, she returned to her motherly duties.
In 2010, Kyla gave birth to a baby girl, Lyric Kai Kirkpatrick; and in 2013, she gave birth to her other daughter, Liyah Kirkpatrick.
Although Kyla continued to act on small projects to keep herself busy, her devotion to her girls and the importance of bonding with her family was a priority.
Kyla joined the cast of BET’s “Lets Stay Together” (in 2014) during its second season; and in February 2014 was voted #97 on VHI’s 100 Greatest Child Stars.
One of the most arduous things to execute is to change the minds of the fans by convincing them that you are no longer a ‘kid’ anymore. The transition from kid star to leading actress can be challenging at times, but that wasn’t the case for her.
Kyla understands the power of reinvention. Thus, when she wasn’t in front of the camera, she was busy molding herself into an ingenue right before our eyes. Kyla has been heavily involved in private coaching and attending acting classes to perfect her acting skills. Concurrently, taking advanced yoga and pilates classes to mold her incredible body.
Well, we guess hard work pays off!
As of late, she starred in the Tate Bros Film, Back To The Goode Life, which aired a couple of weeks ago on BET opposite London Brown. She played ‘Francesca Goode’ – a successful, New York banker who goes from being a `Boss Lady’ to a`Broke Chick’ – the FBI freezed all her assets after she’s wrongfully blamed for unethical banking. Directed by Tamika Miller.
That’s not all she has been brewing…
Recently, Kyla Pratt has signed onto the Fox comedy pilot, “Patty’s Auto.”
The inspiration is taken from Patrice Banks’ Girls Auto Clinic – an automobile repair shop ran by all female mechanics. The project is based around ‘Patty’ (Carra Patterson) and the eclectic women who work for her. Kyla will be playing the role of ‘Tiny,’ Patty’s younger sister with a different father who gives manicures inside the shop, often getting frustrated with her sibling for treating her like a kid (even when she acts like one herself ). This show promises to be comical, endearing and whispered to be one of her best performances.
So while we are at home mulling over on whatever happened to Ms. Pratt?! She’s too busy working.

Watch the Bad Mind Music Video HERE
The Bad Mind music video was shot in Brooklyn, capturing the essence of a classic NYC break-up story. The sentiments conveyed in the video are all too familiar for many: trying to make it through a downpoint of a relationship when the end is inevitable. Love shows off his acting chops in the narrative video, demonstrating his multi-dimensional talents outside of music.
The video was directed by Ronald Reid and also features actress/model Indy Santana.
Love earned a Grammy nomination earlier this year, for songwriting credits on H.E.R.’s breakout single – Focus – which was nominated in the Best R&B Song category. The self-taught singer/producer is slated for a big second half of 2019, with a couple singles slated for release in the summer months ahead.
Justin Love is a singer, songwriter and producer from Cliffside Park, NJ. His work has been praised by the like of notable musicians & producers such as, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, Jermaine Dupri and more. Along Justin’s quick rise to fame, he has excelled in co-writing for many of the world’s top acts including the 2016 smash hit “Focus” by H.E.R.
Justin’s sound can be described as trap/hip-hop meets R&B Soul. Justin recently opened for A Boogie Wit A Hoodie and is set to release new music throughout 2019. The self-taught, 22-year-old musicians honed his performance skills the same way he built his large following: “I build my sound and my following on my voice and a bluetooth speaker while singing to onlookers at malls in my hometown”.
