Real Price Transparency Empowers Patients and Leads to More and Better Choices

Independent Women’s Voice (IWV), in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order to arm patients with price and quality information about their health care, thanks President Trump for the courage and vision to make American health care great again. Health care is not a right or left issue; it should be about patients and their doctors, not about protecting insurers, hospitals, drug companies, pharmacies, and special interest groups. Today’s executive order is an overdue and much-needed first step towards truly consumer-friendly and consumer-driven health care.

In no sphere of our lives but health care would we engage in transactions with no idea what they will cost, no idea what alternative providers would charge, and obscure, exorbitant bills that come long after the fact with arbitrary, costly charges, like facility fees, attached.

“Ours is not a rational or transparent healthcare system, but one rigged to provide maximum obscurity and maximum advantage to the big business of health care,” said Heather Higgins, CEO of IWV. “We thank President Trump and his administration for feeling the pain of patients and doctors, taking on these deep-pocketed special interests, and putting the American people, who have been so hurt by these practices, first.”

We encourage the relevant regulatory agencies to implement rules under this executive order that all net and cash prices are posted online, for consumers to see, including the all-in costs and fees they will be charged before any and all procedures or purchases, rather than after. That will end surprise bills. Equally important, so that we can begin to make health care once again affordable, these rules must allow patients to compare all options, including outside their network and cash prices, for all non-emergency care. This will drive prices down, as it has in every other sphere where markets exist, will make HSA”s workable, and will make health care affordable for the many who are now foregoing it.

Catt Sadler is Speaking Up to ‘Change This STAT’ on Cervical Cancer Screening

Questions for 360 Magazine with Catt Sadler on 6-20-19 on Cervical Cancer.

Question: Talking about cervical cancer. Why are women less likely to be screened?

Catt Sadler: Well, I think there’s a plethora of reasons why women are not getting screened. Sometimes it’s just that they’re so incredibly busy. You know, we forget we’re in the fast lane. We have so many obligations that we’re just not making our annual exam a priority. I also think that, a lot of women just aren’t armed with the information. The statistics are alarming. They’re shocking. One woman every two hours is dying of cervical cancer. One in five women are not getting screened for cervical cancer. More than half of the new cases of cervical cancer are in women who are rarely getting screened or aren’t getting screened at all. So we want to empower women with this information to go out and do what they need to do because cervical cancer is so very preventable, right? So if I can use my voice and be aligned with this initiative to help women get to the doctor and we can in fact change these statistics, then I will have done my job.

Question: Great. Is health insurance not taking preventative measures or is health insurance taking preventative measures for this?

Catt Sadler: It’s my understanding that health insurance is very on board with this cause. Obviously we want to eliminate the deaths associated with cervical cancer in general. So most insurance policies are covering the HPV and pap test together as part of the well visit. I understand that the Affordable Care Act also covers this particular screening. But there’s a wealth of information on changethisstat.com/ for more specifics on how it might pertain to you and whatever plan that you have personally.

Question: And what made you want to be part of this discussion?

Catt Sadler: Well, I’m a champion of women in general. I have spoken out on a lot of issues. I believe in standing up and using our voices. I’ve done that in regards to pay inequality. I work with a foundation, Women Like Us, where I’m supporting women-led causes all around the world. And so when this was brought to my attention that cervical cancer was killing so many women and that it was so preventable, it just seemed like such an easy formula that if I could use my voice and put it out there and tell women what they can so easily do to make change. It was really a no-brainer.

Question: And are there any dietary measures women can take to lessen their chances of contracting this disease?

Catt Sadler: I’m not sure about that. I am not a medical expert. But I do know that again, the website answers those very specific medical questions. I would say to go to changethisstat.com/. There is a lot of information out there all over the Internet, but not all of it is particularly accurate. I’m confident that what you will find on

changethisstat.com/ is really the best information out there for women in regards to that.

Question: And last question, can self-diagnosis help or are there any early signs women can be on the lookout for?

Catt Sadler: Not really. No. I mean, that’s what’s kind of scary about cervical cancer in particular. It’s not like you start feeling a different way necessarily. You might feel as if you’re in perfect health. There aren’t any real glaring signs necessarily, and it can happen so quickly. Hence the encouragement of going to your doctor annually and regularly, you know. It doesn’t matter your age. It doesn’t matter how you’re feeling. It’s just all of the experts in all of the research is pointing to going and getting this particular screening at your doctor.

Question: Okay, thanks. Give me that website one more time.

Catt Sadler: It’s changethisstat.com/

Question: Perfect. Thanks, Catt.

Catt Sadler: You’re welcome. All right. Take care. Bye. Bye.

5 Tech Trends That Businesses Can’t Afford To Ignore

With technology evolving at such a rapid pace, some business owners are left digitally disoriented as they try to figure out which of the latest innovations they need to invest in and what they can ignore.

It can make for confusing times.

All that bewilderment aside, though, these fast-developing advances also create opportunities that can help small and medium-sized businesses become more competitive – if they understand how to seize them.

“Technology exists today that at one time was available only to large corporations with huge technology budgets,” says Chris Hoose (www.choosenetworks.com), an IT consultant who works with small businesses.

“Every year, technology becomes even more accessible to companies of all sizes.”

Hoose says businesses that want to stay on top of their games should make sure they invest in these technological trends, if they haven’t already:

The Internet of Things. Many Internet of Things-connected devices, such as smart refrigerators and thermostats, are designed for home use, but there are also applications for small businesses, Hoose says. Some examples: smart locks use digital keys that can’t be lost or stolen, and log a record of who uses a door and when; RFID tags on merchandise can prevent theft and automatically update inventory; and mobile-card readers can replace cash registers.

Artificial intelligence. Don’t be fooled into thinking that AI is something only the big organizations can afford to use, Hoose says. “It’s making inroads into technologies accessible for businesses of all sizes,” he says. “AI can help you offer increasingly personalized experiences to customers by maximizing your time and automating manual tasks, like data entry.” AI also can be used to improve decision making, Hoose says. Essentially, AI will help you take that jumble of data most businesses have and analyze it in a way that allows you to make better-informed judgments on the actions you need to take.

Telecommuting. The office world is changing and more workers spend at least a portion of their work week telecommuting. “In many cases remote employees use their own equipment, which can eliminate some of the company’s costs with purchasing and maintaining computers, printers and mobile phones,” Hoose says. Video conferencing, instant messaging and other advances are helping to make telecommuting a viable option, he says. You can read more at Salesforce.

Customer-relationship-management (CRM) software. Any application that a business uses to interact with customers, analyze data, or recommend products and services to customers is “part of the CRM family,” Hoose says. “This type of software helps your team manage, control and build customer relationships,” he says. “It can log your team’s touchpoints with prospects, including emails, phone calls, voicemails and in-person meetings. You can have a complete record of your team’s interaction with a prospect that’s easy for anyone to access.”

Voice search. Consumers increasingly are making use of such AI assistants as Siri or Alexa to help them do internet searches using their voices. “Voice search is changing the way people find information because these queries are structured differently than when we type terms into a search engine,” Hoose says.

“Organizations of all types can benefit from optimizing their content to improve where they fall in a voice search.”

“To help propel your business going forward, it’s important to stay abreast of technology innovation,” Hoose says. “These technologies will help you expand your customer base, create more efficient in-house processes, and increase engagement from both customers and staff.”

The stars of the restaurant world converged this evening (25th June 2019) for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 awards, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. This year’s event saw 26 countries across five continents honoured with a place on the list, which culminated with the announcement of a new No.1, as Chef Mauro Colagreco took to the stage to collect the double honours for his restaurant, Mirazur, in Menton, France, as The World’s Best Restaurant 2019 and The Best Restaurant in Europe 2019.

Taking over the No.1 position from Osteria Francescana, which has been elevated to the Best of the Best hall of fame, Mirazur climbed to the top from the No.3 spot in 2018. In 2017, the restaurant ranked No.4 on the list. Colagreco’s Mirazur is joined in the top three positions by Noma (No.2) in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Asador Etxebarri (No.3), in Atxondo, Spain.

irazur’s accolade is a testament to Chef Colagreco’s love of local produce, most of which is grown in the restaurant’s three-tiered garden just metres from the dining room, complemented by a stunning French Riviera backdrop.

William Drew, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, said: “This year we are thrilled to see Mirazur claim the No.1 spot after rising through the ranks since making its debut on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list at No.35 in 2009: it’s been brilliant to witness its progress. This has been a wonderful, progressive year for the list as a whole, with so many new entries from all corners of the globe. We are equally delighted to welcome the seven previous No.1 restaurants into the newly created Best of the Best category.”

Spain leads the way with seven of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, including three in the top 10: Asador Etxebarri (No.3); Mugaritz (No.7); and Disfrutar (No.9). Just outside the top 10, Azurmendi in Larrabetzu, leaps 29 places to No.14 to win the Westholme Highest Climber Award 2019. France is also well represented with five restaurants in the top 50, including Arpège (No.8), Septime (No.15), Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée (No.16), Alléno Paris au Pavillon Ledoyen (No.25), as well as Mirazur.

The USA claims six restaurants in the list, including Cosme (No.23), which is helmed by The World’s Best Female Chef 2019, Daniela Soto-Innes, and two new entries: Atelier Crenn (No.35), and Benu (No.47), both in San Francisco, California.

This year, Denmark boasts top-five honours for the new incarnation of Noma (No.2) and Geranium (No.5), both in Copenhagen. Peru also makes the top ten list with entries from Lima including Central (No.6), once again voted The Best Restaurant in South America, and Maido (No.10). Mexico also claims two spots in the upper echelons of the list including Pujol (No.12), which is named The Best Restaurant in North America, and Quintonil (No.24), both in Mexico City. The UK, Italy, Japan, China, Thailand and Russia are also each represented with two restaurants on the list.

Alain Passard of Arpège in Paris, France (No.8), wins the Chefs’ Choice Award, sponsored by Estrella Damm. The prestigious accolade is voted on by the world’s leading chefs in the list and awarded to a peer who has made a significant impact to the culinary world in the past year.

The Art of Hospitality Award, sponsored by Legle, goes to Tokyo’s Den (No.11). The restaurant is highly regarded for its holistic approach to service from the moment guests make their reservation to the minute they leave the premises. Asia-based restaurants also include Gaggan (No.4), in Bangkok, named The Best Restaurant in Asia, and Odette (No.18) from the host city of Singapore. The Test Kitchen (No.44) from Cape Town is The Best Restaurant in Africa.

Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau, Switzerland (No.50) wins the Sustainable Restaurant Award 2019. This award is independently audited by Food Made Good Global – the international arm of the Sustainable Restaurant Association – which rates establishments in the extended list of 120 restaurants that self-nominate for the award based on set sustainability criteria.

New for 2019, the American Express Icon Award is bestowed on US-based Spanish chef and humanitarian José Andrés. This prestigious honour celebrates an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the restaurant world over their career to date and whose reach extends beyond the kitchen.

Jessica Préalpato, the Head Pastry Chef at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée (No.16) in Paris, receives The World’s Best Pastry Chef Award, sponsored by Sosa. Préalpato’s innovative ethos is based on creating natural desserts with seasonal produce that are high in flavour, but low in sugar and fat.

Finally, Lido 84 in Gardone Riviera, Italy, takes home the Miele One To Watch Award, which recognises a global rising-star restaurant from the extended ranking that has the potential to make an impact on the list in future years. Entering at No.78, keep an eye out for it in the lists to come.

The voting process

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 list is voted for by more than 1,000 international restaurant industry experts and well-travelled gourmets who make up The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy. The Academy comprises 26 separate regions around the world, each of which has 40 members, including a chairperson. None of the event’s sponsors has any influence over the voting process. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is independently adjudicated by professional services consultancy Deloitte. This adjudication ensures that the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 is protected.

Best of the Best

Those in the elite group of No.1 ranked restaurants (listed below) have more than proved their worth and will now be forever honoured as iconic dining destinations in the Best of the Best hall of fame. The chefs and restaurateurs who have led their restaurants to the pinnacle of the list have expressed their desire to invest in the future of the sector and ‘give back’ to the food world through new projects and initiatives. The following restaurants have been named No.1 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants since the list’s inception and were therefore not eligible for voting in 2019 or beyond:

  • • El Bulli (2002, 2006-2009)

For years, Good Dee’s creator and founder Deana Karim searched high and low for the perfect cookie. A lifelong struggle with weight gain and a family history of diabetes limited Karim to low-fat options, which lacked the full flavor of traditional baked goods while hiding some undesirable ingredients of their own. Unable to find an alternative that could satisfy sweet cravings and help maintain a healthy lifestyle, Karim resolved to create her own.

“I realized that if I kept depriving myself and thinking I was on a diet, I would fail,” explains Karim. “I embraced going low-carb and sugar-free and looked up alternative sweeteners. Through months of trial and error, I made a cookie that, after numerous taste tests, got a giant thumbs up.” With overwhelming approval by eaters of all different diets and lifestyles, Karim knew she had something special.

After the birth of Karim’s second child, she set to work launching Good Dee’s. The company featured a variety of baking mixes, from brownies to pancakes to cookies. A first-generation Middle Eastern immigrant who grew up watching her father start and run a successful business, Karim immediately took to entrepreneurship. Now with an expanded collection offering everything from cracker biscuit and grain-free cornbread to blondies and chocolate chip cookie one-bag mixes, Good Dee’s proves that a healthy lifestyle and good eats really do mix.

Cardiologist Releases Memoir Detailing Her Own Heart Break & Lessons Learned

Today women are fighting for rights to our bodies, searching for success in what is still a men’s dominated workforce, and balancing motherhood along with everything else. We look to influencers and self-help experts for guidance. But the one woman we should look at is someone who helped pave the way for females in all these areas: Barbara Roberts, MD, the first woman to practice adult cardiology in Rhode Island (as a single mother of 3 no less) and outspoken feminist who fought for safe abortions.

Dr. Roberts’ life is a story of passion: for women’s rights, motherhood, medicine, love, and the underdog. She stood up for what she believed in and battled politics, career stereotypes, her children’s fathers, the Family Court system, public scrutiny, and even her own conscience at times. And she made it through all, proving to be the hero of her own unique journey. Her memoir, The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story [Heliotrope Books, September 3, 2019], details it all.

“I wrote this book because the world has changed so much from the world I grew up in,” Dr. Roberts recently told NBC 10’s Coffee Break with Frank and Friends Facebook TV Show. “I wanted particularly younger women to be able to learn some lessons in how to survive adversity, how to overcome heartbreak and how to come out in the end and really have led a full and happy life.

About Barbara Hudson Roberts, MD

Barbara Hudson Roberts, MD was the first female adult cardiologist in the state of Rhode Island. She graduated from Barnard College and Case Western Reserve School of Medicine. As a resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, she became active in the pro-choice movement, before Roe v Wade made abortion legal. She helped found the Women’s National Abortion Action Coalition (WONAAC) and was the keynote speaker at the first national pro-choice demonstration in Washington DC in November 1971. She also was active in the anti-Vietnam War movement, and spoke at the last mass anti-war demonstration on the grounds of the Washington Monument on the day of Nixon’s inauguration in 1973. She was a staff physician at Planned Parenthood for many years, and continues on the voluntary faculty at Brown where she is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine.

About the Doctor Broad

The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story is the memoir of Barbara H. Roberts, MD.  There are people in the know who say that she caused the downfall of the New England Mafia. She did this, not by killing someone, or sending someone to jail, but by keeping someone alive, and out of prison, for about a year too long. During this time, Roberts navigated life in two separate worlds. In the “straight” world, she was a single mother of three, the first woman to practice adult cardiology in Rhode Island, and an active feminist. In the other world she was the physician whose testimony prevented Raymond L. S. Patriarca, the head of the New England Mafia, from having to go to trial, and the secret lover of the alleged #3 man in the New England Mafia, Louis “Baby Shanks” Manocchio. Roberts’ commitment to feminism and medicine leads her into unexpected byways as she faces moral dilemmas she never envisioned, but two things of the girl she once was remain: a love of children and a desire to heal. Her story was even featured on an episode of the Crimetown podcast.

The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story releases on September 3, 2019.

Brittany Howard’s Debut Solo

History Repeats is as much a personal song as it is a song about us as a human species. See below for links to her social media.

Howard will support the album with a North American tour, which includes two-night stands at intimate venues in Asheville, NC, Washington, DC and Los Angeles. For complete pre-sale details visit www.citientertainment.com.

Howard recorded Jaime after a cross country drive that took her from Nashville to a small house in Topanga, CA a rustic Los Angeles county town wedged between the mountains and the beach. She titled the album after her sister, who taught her to play the piano and write poetry, and who died of cancer when they were still teenagers.

The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being, saysBrittany Howard. But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.

While Howard admits it was daunting, stepping out alone from her work with Alabama Shakes and revealing so much of herself, it was a necessary step. I turned 30 and I was like, What do I want the rest of my life to look like? she recalls. Do I want to play the same songs until I’m 50 and then retire, or do I do something that’s scarier for me? Do I want people to understand me and know me, do I want to tell them my story? I’m very private, but my favorite work is when people are being honest and really doing themselves.

She brought a handful of finished songs into engineer Shawn Everett’s L.A. studio. Once she started working with the band she had assembled a core group of Alabama Shake’s bassist Zac Cockrell, innovative jazz-based keyboard player Robert Glasper and drummer Nate Smith the music started to take shape. Different sounds and approaches began to emerge. Howard examines spiritual ritual on He Loves Me and celebrates love with Georgia. Goat Head is informed by the experience of growing up as a mixed-race child in the South while 13th Century Metal grew out of Glasper and Smith jamming in the studio. See below for track listing.

As the front woman and guitarist for Alabama Shakes, Howard has become one of music’s most celebrated figures. The band has won four GRAMMY Awards and topped the Billboard 200 with the Gold-certified Sound & Color, the follow-up to its Platinum debut album, Boys & Girls. Howard has performed everywhere from the Obama White House to the main stage at Lollapalooza, where she sang with Paul McCartney at his invitation. In between albums and tours with Alabama Shakes, Howard grows restless. To me, there is no time off  I’m a creative person and I need to create, or I just feel weird, not fully human, she says. She’s channeled that relentless creativity into Jaime, her most revelatory work yet.

Pediatric Health

NEW YORK, NY—June 24, 2019—Pediatricians seeking to address the social and economic concerns that can affect the health of their young patients must first build trusting relationships with parents and alleviate concerns that child protective services may be alerted, according to a report released today by United Hospital Fund and the nonprofit research organization Public Agenda.

“Parents bring their young children to the pediatrician up to 11 times within the first two years of life, and each of these visits offers an opportunity to identify unmet social needs and coordinate care with community-based services,” said Suzanne Brundage, director of UHF’s Children’s Health Initiative. “As screening for social determinants of health becomes more common in pediatric practices, qualitative and quantitative research can help us understand and improve how parents experience these screenings.”

Parents in four of the focus groups were recruited by community-based organizations that are part of UHF’s Partnerships for Early Childhood Development initiative, set up to help pediatric practices routinely screen young children and their families for social determinants and connect them with social services that can address those risks. The rest of the parents were recruited by professional market research facilities. Two of the eight focus groups were conducted in Spanish.

Support for the report was provided by a grant from United Hospital Fund. UHF’s Children’s Health Initiative, which commissioned and collaborated on this work, is funded in part by the William J. & Dorothy K. O’Neill Foundation and the Ira W. DeCamp Foundation.

The full report can be downloaded here.

From that point forward Leah’s résumé began to expand at lightning speed. She won the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Match (and the second), defeated Charlotte Flair to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship, and won the second-ever WrestleMania Women’s, Battle Royal. Her competitiveness is matched by her creativity, which exploded in the freewheeling sideshow of the Mixed Match Challenge, where she joined forces with R-Truth to originate an endearing seven-second dance break en route to winning the competition.

From the field to the court, to the ring, and beyond–Leah is consistently proving that there isn’t anything she can’t accomplish.

She most recently has expanded her career as a successful business woman with her new wine brand, Capo Cagna.

Capo Cagna truly aligns with who Leah is as someone who is fearless on and off camera. Loosely translating to “Boss Bitch” in Italian, Leah describes a Capo Cagna as “a strong, successful, and independent woman.” Leah focuses on inspiring women to feel strong, empowered, and unapologetically themselves.

Leah’s career is a testament to hard work, perseverance and making the most of every opportunity that comes your way.
