POP Montreal 21st edition is just weeks away. It’s time to get excited! The notion of “going back to normal” isn’t really POP Montreal‘s jam. They will forever be moving forward, doing their best to care of their community and create spaces that allow for all kinds of voices to come together. One of the lessons they’ve learned over the “panini” is that being in relation with each other is the essential ingredient of culture. So let’s come together and experience the most delicious musical sandwich the city can offer. It’s thrilled to fill in the festival palette with all kinds of awesome gems. Adding to the previously announced festival headliners (including Allison Russell, Tortoise, The Linda Lindas, Cymande, Wayne Snow, Lydia Képinski, Martha Wainwright, Haru Nemuri), it is pleased to announce over 100 more artists who will be performing at the festival this year. There will be tons of new discoveries and familiar faces including the visionary electro pop boss Tess Roby, post pow wow experimentalist Joe Rainey, Latinx pop princess Isabella Lovestory, Toronto’s rap maverick Witch Prophet, Indigenous futurists and Polaris shortlist favourites Ombiigizi, Montreal’s post classical icon’s Esmerine, the catchy catchiness of hitmaker maxime., the electric punk pop songstress Sophia Bel and lots, lots more
Art POP
At Projet Casa and Rialto
Art POP will be hosting its annual group exhibition (for the first time at Project Casa gallery) alongside several satellite events that will bring film screenings, literary readings and workshops into various spaces surrounding POP Quarters in Mile End.

in the Plateau from Sept 15 to Oct 2.
At a distance from within is an exhibition that examines the exercise of placemaking within a diasporic context, while also connecting this theme to ecological allegories in relationality. In its Greek etymology, diaspora refers to the ancient Greek “dia speiro”, which translates “to sow over.” Originating from Jewish history and identity, the word has been expanded to define those who have been dispersed from a common origin. //At a distance – from within// draws from the allegory of the seed as an entity that creates a sense of rhizomatic placemaking. This relational form of placemaking refers then to the flourishing of communities, practices, and exchanges that come from diverse and multiple diasporas.

Aside from the exhibition at Project Casa, Art POP will be partnering with Projet Tabloïde to present artwork from Toronto-based artist Holly Chang in the corner of Mont-Royal and Saint Hubert.

Art POP is also thrilled to renew its collaboration with LOVE (Québec) a non-profit organization which seeks to support youth with programs that teach them about healthy relationships, building emotional intelligence, and that help them overcome the challenges they face. For this year’s LOVE and POP Montreal collaboration, a creative workshop was led by artists Dayna Danger and Megan kanerahtenha:wi Whyte. The young participating artists created a triptych to represent the past, present, and future relationships between humanity and nature across time, as well as the need for compassion towards the environment, oneself, and others.

Film POP
at Cinema Moderne and Entrepôt 77
Music films are having a moment. Cannon fodder in the streaming wars, they’re being hastily purchased, packaged and released by platforms big and small to give you something to watch while folding your laundry. With this edition of Film POP, we are overjoyed to present, in 10 screenings, works that merit the trip to the cinema. You can expect this year’s best in music documentary filmmaking*, as well as recent restorations of woefully underseen gems. Don’t miss the PHI Foundation’s guest program, always a Film POP highlight, and our closing film, preceded by a new work from Asinnajaq!

POP Symposium

Every year, POP Symposium brings people together to discuss the most pressing issues facing the music industry. With the major challenges of the last few years, we need to come together both as a community and an industry to chart exciting new collective futures.
This year’s POP Symposium‘s new director Eve Parker Finlay presents an inspiring suite of hands-on workshops and panel discussions aimed at empowering the next generation of artists to build sustainable careers. Come participate in the “Do-It-Together” day of workshops about everything from syncing to writing grants, or join a full day of sessions focused on the climate crisis and music. Kids POP

Butterfly Puppet Workshop 11:30 am – 1 pm
For anyone who has ever wondered: what is it like to be a butterfly? This workshop will provide art activities for kids of all ages to contribute to the building of a butterfly puppet large enough to embody. Join us at Entrepot77 for a collaborative puppet-building workshop where we will bring a butterfly to life- not from a chrysalis, but from mostly recycled materials. Stick around to watch our puppet fly and let its wings lead us to Socalled’s puppet show at 1pm.
Socalled & Friends: TIME – THE 4th SEASON – 1 pm
After a wildly successful performance at the Kampnagel Festival in Hamburg Germany, Socalled and friends will entertain us with a taste of their loveable puppet musical, THE SEASON. Expect some fuzzy puppets and musical magic!
