PRIDE MONTH PROMOTIONS: CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY, CONTEMPORARY JEWISH MUSEUM, OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA

Three Bay Area cultural organizations – California Historical Society (CHS), The Contemporary Jewish Museum (CJM), and Oakland Museum of California (OMCA)– are joining together to celebrate PRIDE month with a wide range of programs at each institution, including exhibitions, a lecture series, special programming, and events to help tell the unique stories of the LGBTQA community and shine a light on its historical importance to the region, state, and nation.

This is the first time these three organizations have worked together to promote special programming, also complementing two ongoing exhibitions focused on LGBTQA communities: at The CJM, Show Me as I Want to Be Seen, through July 7, and at OMCA, Queer California: Untold Stories, through August 11. Over the weekend of June 22–23, members of each organization will receive reciprocal access to all three institutions. The California Historical Society programming includes a lecture series held every Tuesday evening during PRIDE month beginning at 6 pm at the CHS galleries at 678 Mission Street featuring authors, archivists, photographers, filmmakers, and historians. The lecture topics include a panel discussion (June 7) Understanding LGBTQA Histories Through Collections and Archives; a talk about Transgender History: The Roots of Today’s Revolution (June 11) with award-winning scholar and filmmaker Susan Stryker; a film screening and discussion of Major! The life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (June 18); and a presentation on California’s “Gay Revolution” in the Stonewall Era (June 25).

The Contemporary Jewish Museum’s current exhibition (on view through July 7), Show Me as I Want to Be Seen, asks how do we depict “the self” if it is unknowable, inherently constructed, and ever-changing? Positioning the work of French Jewish artist and writer Claude Cahun (1894–1954) and her lifelong lover and collaborator Marcel Moore (1892–1972) alongside ten contemporary artists—many of whom identify as LGBTQA and gender non-binary—Show Me as I Want to Be Seen examines the empowered representation of fluid and complex identity. The CJM will also host a one-day-only Zine Fest on June 9, featuring zines and comic art celebrating self-expression in all its forms. On June 20, The CJM will participate in Call and Responses: Curator Swap, a new progressive gallery talk in collaboration with CHS and the Museum of the African Diaspora, which will bring together educators and curators to examine work on view at the three museums in connection with PRIDE.

In addition to its exhibition, Queer California: Untold Stories (on view through August 11), which explores many of the untold narratives of California’s LGBTQA communities through contemporary art and history, the Oakland Museum of California will also host special events and film screenings during PRIDE month. This includes, among another programming, Friday Nights at OMCA on June 7 that features Queer California Drag Family Storytime (6-7 pm) and Queer California Film Series (7:30 pm);  In Conversation: Queer Cinema on June 14, a powerful conversation about the history of queer movie-making and the absence of queer stories from mainstream cinema; and In Conversation: Black Trans Women on Resilience and Strength on June 15, a multigenerational discussion on transgender rights and policies to help us imagine a safe and equitable queer future.

During the San Francisco PRIDE parade on June 30, staff members from each of the three institutions, in partnership with several other Bay Area cultural institutions, will march in the parade together as part of Museums with Pride.

To learn more about these and other PRIDE events being organized during the month of June, please visit each organization’s website www.californiahistoricalsociety.org,www.thecjm.org, and www.museumca.org.

As Airline Satisfaction Climbs to Record Highs, Line Blurs Between Low-Cost and Traditional Carriers, J.D. Power Finds

Alaska Airlines Ranks Highest among Traditional Carriers for 12th Consecutive Year; JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines Tie for Highest Rank among Low-Cost Carriers

Is this the golden age of air travel? According to the J.D. Power 2019 North America Airline Satisfaction Study, SM a combination of newer planes, better ticket value and improved customer touchpoints have driven overall satisfaction with airlines to its highest point in history, up 11 points (on a 1,000-point scale) from last year’s record-setting performance. The surge is driven by significant improvements among traditional carriers, while satisfaction slowed with low-cost carriers.

“Airlines continue to deliver on the operational side of air travel,” said Michael Taylor, Travel Intelligence Lead at J.D. Power. “New technology investments have dramatically improved the reservation and check-in process. Fleets are newer and travelers generally feel that they are getting great value for their money. These improvements have been most profound in the traditional carrier segment, where customer satisfaction has climbed considerably.

“While low-cost carriers have historically had the highest levels of customer satisfaction in our study, due to a strong sense of value for money among customers, that line is starting to blur as traditional carriers improve their services and operations,” Taylor added. “The one area where both traditional and low-cost carriers can still improve, however, is in in-flight services. It continues to be the lowest-ranked factor in the study, as many airlines still struggle with in-flight entertainment, connectivity, in-seat power, and food service.”

Following are some of the key findings of the 2019 study:

  • Record-high customer satisfaction: Overall satisfaction with airlines increases 11 points to 773, continuing an eight-year trend of satisfaction improvement.
  • Improvement is driven by traditional carriers: This year’s significant gains in customer satisfaction are driven by the traditional carriers, whose segment satisfaction score improves 22 points from 2018. The low-cost segment—while still having higher overall satisfaction than the traditional carrier segment—declines 6 points from 2018, thus driving a segment convergence in satisfaction.
  • Tech investments in reservation and check-in systems pay off: The reservation and check-in experiences are the most satisfying portions of the airline experience, driven by investments in digital check-in technologies, self-service kiosks and a concerted effort among airlines to improve the efficiency of the pre-flight process.
  • In-flight service remains a stumbling block: In-flight services, such as seatback entertainment, food service, and Wi-Fi continue to be the lowest-ranked part of the air traveler experience. Specific in-flight amenities that have the greatest positive effect on customer satisfaction are fresh food, seatback games and seatback live television.

Study Rankings

Among traditional carriers, Alaska Airlines ranks highest for the 12th consecutive year, with a score of 801. Delta Air Lines (788) ranks second and American Airlines (764) ranks third.

Among low-cost carriers, JetBlue Airways (817) and Southwest Airlines (817) rank highest in a tie. For Southwest, this is the third consecutive year at the top of the J.D. Power ranking.

Among Canada-based airlines, Air Canada (729) saw its customer satisfaction score declined 5 points from 2018. WestJet (758) saw its score increase 11 points but remains below the low-cost carrier average.

The North America Airline Satisfaction Study, now in its 15th year, measures passenger satisfaction with airline carriers in North America based on performance in seven factors (in order of importance): cost and fees; in-flight services; aircraft; boarding/deplaning/baggage; flight crew; check-in; and reservation. The study measures passenger satisfaction among both business and leisure travelers and is based on responses from 5,966 passengers who flew on a major North American airline between March 2018 and March 2019. The study was fielded from April 2018 through March 2019.

New Summer Experiences at Toscana Resort Castelfalfi in Tuscany

Toscana Resort astelfalfi, one of Europe’s finest eco-sustainable retreats in the heart of Tuscany, is pleased to announce its summer calendar of engaging events and immersive experiences. Including a new spa collaboration with LAJATICA featuring a range of innovative wine-based treatments; the second edition of OltreColle, a food, crafts and music festival; and an art exhibition showcasing works from the region’s own acclaimed sculptor Franco Mauro Franchi, the resort further demonstrates its connection to the landscape and resident community through the following exciting roster of activities.

NEW SPA COLLABORATION WITH LAJATICA FEATURES GRAPE-BASED TREATMENTS

  • Housed in Il Castelfalfi, the resort’s five-star hotel, La Spa extends a range of soothing treatments made from local, organic ingredients and provides an idyllic place to find calm, in keeping with the hotel’s dedication to holistic wellbeing. An 11,000 square-foot rejuvenating sanitarium, La Spa boasts a wide range of spiritual treatments and nature-inspired beauty rituals, indoor and outdoor pools, Finnish and bio saunas, sensory showers and relaxation areas. From this month, the spa is collaborating with Bocelli Wines to offer guests an organic, grape-based range of facial and body treatments, furthering the resort’s ongoing efforts to lead Italy’s green movement from within the hospitality industry. Created locally in Tuscany, the LAJATICA vinotherapy products are made entirely from the by-products of wine produced at the Bocelli family vineyards and blended with Tuscan plants and essential oils. Helping to reduce the signs of aging, boost circulation, and promote brighter skin, these products can be enjoyed by guests during indulging treatments on the property or by purchasing to use at home.

CASTELFALFI CELEBRATES RICH TUSCAN CULTURE WITH SECOND ANNUAL OLTRECOLLE FESTIVAL

  • After a successful first edition, the second OltreColle festival is scheduled to take place in Castelfalfi from June 29 – 30, 2019. The two-day festival will feature live acoustic, jazz and blues concerts, contemporary and street art installations, theater performances, colorful parades, vintage flea markets, and Italian street food – all overlooking the Tuscan countryside. A collective exhibition of artists, musicians, and sculptors from all over Tuscany, OltreColle extends the opportunity for guests to mix and mingle with dozens of unique Italian artisans and purveyors over the course of the weekend. Access to the festival is complimentary for hotel guests and Castelfalfi property owners.

INAUGURAL ART EXHIBITION OPENS UP THE CELLARS OF CASTELFALFI CASTLE

  • Paying homage to the rich history of Castelfalfi, guests of Toscana Resort Castelfalfi can now experience a new GEA art exhibition over the summer months curated by Alberto Bartalini. A celebration of life and rebirth, the exhibit embodies the renaissance of Toscana Resort Castelfalfi through the work of Italian sculptor Franco Mauro Franchi and will run through January 6, 2020. Dotted across various locales, part of the exhibition will be displayed within the cellars of Castelfalfi Castle, a space that has been hidden to the public for decades. Originally used as prison cells at the turn of the nineteenth century, the vaults gradually transitioned their purpose over the years, to become wine cellars and then a backdrop for the classic children’s film Pinocchio by Roberto Benigni. A hugely significant piece in the history of Castelfalfi, the official unveiling of the Castle Cellars is a noteworthy event for the estate. Now, for the first time ever, guests and the local community can experience the cellars first-hand.

Visitors looking to experience this summer’s guest programming can take advantage of the Castelfalfi You & Me offer, which includes two nights of accommodations at Il Castelfalfi – TUI BLUE SELECTION, a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts L.V.X. Collection; one dinner for two at La Via del Sale; and one spa treatment for two at La Spa, starting at US$952 for two persons, for two nights. To book, please visit www.castelfalfi.com. Today, British producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist SG Lewis unveils the dark and twisted official video for his latest single, “Flames” featuring 16-year old Australian pop star Ruel (RCA). Out now via Casablanca/Republic Records in North America, ‘Flames’, a sure fire song of the summer, was recently hailed by Billboard as “smooth and funky, with a slow-jam melody that wafts over a menacing, ’80s-style synth rhythm.” Surpassing 1 million streams in its first week, the song is the latest track taken from ‘Dawn,’ the third and final installment of his three-part concept albumDusk, Dark, Dawnout later this year.

The cinematic, gruesome official video was shot in LA and directed by
Jeremy Koren (Troye Sivan, Ruel), and stars SG Lewis and Ruel – watch it HERE

Speaking about the new song, SG reveals,
I was put onto Ruel’s music about 18 months ago, and watching his growth since then has been amazing. He’s got such soul to his voice for someone of his age, it’s crazy. ‘Flames’ is the final preview of ‘Dawn’ before the whole thing drops, and I can’t wait to share the whole thing.”

Tickets for
SG Lewis’ North American Headline tour are on sale now, kicking off September 3 in Toronto. The twelve date tour hits major cities, including Boston, Brooklyn, Washington DC, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and Denver before concluding at The Novo in Los Angeles on October 12. In addition, you can catch SG making the festival rounds on both sides of the pond, including Glastonbury in the UK, Chicago’s North Coast Festival (TICKETS HERE) and Made In America in Philadelphia (TICKETS HERE). For a complete list of upcoming tour dates and ticket information, please visit www.sglewismusic.com

“Flames” follows previous ‘Dawn’ cuts, ‘Throwaway’, the second collaborative track between SG and rising viral US star Clairo (after last summer’s breakthrough track Better) and “Blue.” Clairo’s honeyed vocals on ‘Throwaway’ are perfectly framed by SG’s intimate, downtempo production; “Clairo is one of my favourite artists to work with, and a good friend of mine” says SG: “Throwaway was written in LA one evening – we were both super tired and had some shit going on in our respective personal lives. We sat and talked for ages, and after that Throwaway flowed out in no time at all. Clairo is such a special artist and an incredible songwriter, and I’m super proud of this song.”

DuskDarkDawn chronicles the trajectory of a night out through its different moods and genres and serves as a tribute to club and youth culture. While Dusk (released earlier in 2018) blended disco, smooth electro and funk and Dark explored distinctly heavier yet still diverse sounds, Dawn is a sonic embodiment of those euphoric sunrise moments and the feeling of togetherness at the end of a night well spent.

It’s been an incredible several months for SG Lewis that has seen the artist sell-out venues across the US, Asia and Europe.
Dark lead single ‘Hurting’ has continued to grow, hitting No.1 on the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay Chart earlier this year, and now with two back-to-back Coachella sets in the bag, SG Lewis continues to cement his status as not just one of London’s hottest new talents but also a formidable artist capable of making a splash on both sides of the Atlantic.

SG has previously collaborated with
Col3traneRayeRay BLKThe Neptunes/N.E.R.D’s Chad HugoGerd JansonConducta and more as well as producing Dave’s ‘100M’s’ proving his worth as one of the most respected and prolific musicians from the UK and a producer capable of working outside of genre and style.

 ABOUT RUEL (RCA)
Ruel is a 16-year-old artist hailing from Australia. His debut EP entitled
READY released last year has surpassed 200M+ global streams and his singles “Younger,” “Dazed & Confused,” and “Don’t Tell Me” have all been certified Gold in Australia. In 2018, Ruel became the youngest recipient in history to win the prestigious Aria Award (aka the Australian “Grammys”) for “Breakthrough Artist of the Year.” In 2019, Ruel continues to break records by becoming the youngest male artist in history to sell out the iconic Sydney Opera House, not once but twice. His current single “Painkiller” is out now, with its already video surpassing 1.6 million streams since its release April 30th. Later this year, Ruel will be joining Shawn Mendes on his 2019 fall Australian and New Zealand tour dates, and made a surprise appearance at Coachella performing with SG Lewis.

Maggie Lindemann Stars In Friends Go

Maggie Lindemann has consistently challenged her self-identity and evolved as an artist throughout a career that’s already seen her pass the billion streams landmark. Her breakthrough smash ‘Pretty Girl’ established her as a breaking pop icon before she took a reflective, goth-tinged approach with ‘Would I’ and ‘Human’.

Her latest cut ‘Friends Go’ continues her exploration of mental health issues, but the music has shifted again with a modernist update of Gwen Stefani-style attitude and summery island rhythms. Now Maggie uses ‘Friends Go’ as the soundtrack to the short film ‘Death By Third Wheel’, which was directed by Van Alpert (Post Malone, Local Natives).

Van Alpert’s vision for the track is cinematic in scale, and captures the emotional heart of the song in a way that’s visually striking.

He commented, “My goal is making a video feel bigger than life, something that you’d only see in a movie theatre – a little escape from your life while you watch. I wanted the car to be a representation of Maggie’s heart. The car crashing, bouncing and exploding in artistic ways gives you an overall feeling of excitement. When you lose your mind from being excluded from your friends or love, your heart goes through it, just like the car.

I strayed away from the obvious storyline, with the backbone being multiple beautiful crashes where no-one gets hurt. The video is fun and surprising. It hits you over the head and gives you clues throughout of what’s coming. It was the most fun I’ve ever had making a video.”

‘Friends Go’ commences Maggie’s build-up to her first full-length project which is set to be released later in the year. It’s set to add another new chapter to a career in which Maggie has emerged as an icon of her generation, with over a billion audio streams, 5.4 million monthly listeners at Spotify, 186 million views at YouTube, 3.5 million followers at Instagram and an international array of Platinum awards. She’s also performed with Khalid, Troye Sivan and Sabrina Carpenter. She has garnered critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Complex, Uproxx, NYLON, Bustle, Idolator, L’Officiel as well as Paper, who named her as one of “100 Women Revolutionizing Pop.”

Maggie has been further celebrated in the world of fashion. She launched her single ‘Obsessed’ with an innovative partnership with the make-up brand Pat McGrath and recently teamed up with Skinny Dip for a sunglasses collaboration. She’s also unveiled her own merch line in the shape of SWIXXZ.
