P2E and Real Money Gaming Explained

A new gaming industry sector has begun to emerge in recent years that rewards players for the time they spend gaming. The profile of play-to-earn gaming – as well as that of its predecessor, real money gaming – has been given a significant boost over the past 18 months thanks to the integration of cryptocurrencies and blockchain tech.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the different categories of play-to-earn (P2E) and real-money gaming.

Real Money Gaming

Real money gaming, in which players have the opportunity to play for financial rewards, was, in many ways, the older cousin of P2E games. While there are important distinctions between the two, with real money gaming often requiring players to spend resources in order to earn, nevertheless the appetite for this type of gaming activity nevertheless has set the stage for P2E games to emerge.

Real money gaming, or iGaming, is still a highly popular online gaming sector, with platforms and apps catering to the needs of players all over the world. Recent expansion has meant that keen players can now play slots in US states, while ongoing online poker tournaments are in regular play throughout Europe.

Early Iterations of Play to Earn Gaming

We saw elements of play-to-earn gaming first emerge into mainstream gaming sectors with the rise of mobile gaming apps. The freemium business model, in which apps are initially free to download and play, but require microtransaction purchases to unlock new levels or character skills, incentivises gamers to play for longer by giving them the opportunity to “earn” in-game items.

These items in-game items often included armour, weapons or other virtual goods necessary for the game, and while players could “trade” their goods virtually, they had no real-world financial value.

As MOBA games and MMORPGs began their ascension, developers started to integrate these loot box rewards into full-scale video games. There may still have been a monetisation elements involved that required players to spend resources to “level up”, but incentives were still there to keep playing in the form of in-game rewards.

The Blockchain Era

The advent of blockchain gaming had a revolutionary impact on the P2E sector by introducing in-game rewards that had a real-world value. The decentralised nature of blockchain tech made it possible for developers to create gamng systems that allowed for the generation and management of digital assets. Previously, in-game items earned by players were tied to that particular game. However, blockchain tech suddenly made it possible for players to have true ownership of their earned assets.

Now, P2E crypto and blockchain gaming – or GameFi as it’s become known – is a fourshing crypto scector that could disrupt the traditional gaming space for several years to come. By rewarding players with assets in the form of NFTs (non-fungible tokens), blockchain games enable gamers to generate genuine financial rewards. NFTs can be bought, sold and traded on blockchain exchanges, which players are then able to convert into fiat currencies or reinvest into a crypto of their choice.

NCT 127 + AY-YO

Today, K-Pop phenomenon NCT 127 have released “Ay-Yo,” a repackaged version of their fourth studio album “질주 (2 Baddies)[우남W2] .” “Ay-Yo” features three brand-new tracks, including its title track by the same name. The physical album is set to release on March 3^rd in the US.

Today’s repackage release features a total of 15 tracks including 12 tracks from the 4th album along with 3 new tracks “Ay-Yo”, “DJ”, and “Skyscraper (摩天樓 [우남W3] ; 마천루)”. Title track “Ay-Yo” is a hip-hop dance track with a core message of moving forward with intention in the midst of uncertainty, as the band continues to establish the values they carry with them. Additionally, “DJ” is a funky up-tempo track that details how the members become DJs themselves, gifting special moments with their own-selected playlists. “Skyscraper (摩天樓; 마천루)” is a powerful hip-hop track detailing ambition, overcoming limits and climbing to the top. With the continued participation of famous writers from the 4th album “질주 (2 Baddies)” such as KENZIE, Dem Jointz, Andreas Öberg, and producer Simon Petré, the album is further enhanced by the additional rapping talent of members TAEYONG and MARK on “DJ” and “Skyscraper (摩天樓; 마천루)”.

The repackage arrives four months following the original release of “질주 (2 Baddies)” this past September. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, making the group only the second K-Pop artist in history to land three albums in the Top 5. The album was praised for its versatility, with Billboard writing, “The album’s sound, meanwhile, shows off the idols’ eclectic versatility as they run through R&B, pop, electronic dance and hip-hop-leaning sounds,” and NYLON claiming, “They’re charismatic and confident, and they’re not afraid to get loud with it.”

NCT 127 recently completed an arena tour across U.S. and South America. The engagements included stops across the United States, Chile, Columbia, and Mexico, as well as three back-to-back shows in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Just this past week, the group also hosted a special virtual event and concert experience on Roblox, a global immersive 3D platform that reimagines the way people come together to connect, create and express themselves. In celebration of their special anniversary, “127 Day,” The NCT 127 Concert Experience included a free interactive virtual concert performance and additional experiences including featured avatar drops. The event marked the first concert in a dedicated K-pop experience on the platform, as well as the largest ever official group performance by any band on Roblox, with nine band members performing virtually. Sam Smith – Gloria Album

Multi-Platinum, GRAMMY®, BRIT, Golden Globe, and Oscar winning artist/songwriter Sam Smith released Gloria, their fourth studio album, today via Capitol Records. Download/stream the album HERE. Smith will perform at the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards® on February 5 and kick off the North American leg of GLORIA The Tour on July 25. The official video for Smith’s new single, “I’m Not Here To Make Friends,” was unveiled today. Rita Ora – You Only Love Me

2023 marks the dawn of a new era for one of the most successful British female artists of the 21st century, Rita Ora, as she releases brand new single “You Only Love Me.”

Co-written by Rita and produced by Lewis Thompson, “You Only Love Me” is inspired by her personal experience of feeling vulnerable at the very start of her romantic journey. Rev Al to Eulogize Tyre Nichols

Reverend Al Sharpton will deliver the eulogy on Tuesday at the funeral of Tyre Nichols, the Memphis man who was beaten and killed by five police officers following a traffic stop.

Earlier this week, prosecutors announced that the police officers would be charged with murder. They were previously fired from their jobs.

“The charges against the police officers who brutally killed Tyre Nichols in Memphis are a necessary first step in delivering justice for Tyre and his family, although nothing will ever be enough to fill the void that his loss has left,” said Reverend Sharpton. “There is no point to putting a body camera on a cop if you aren’t going to hold them accountable when the footage shows them relentlessly beating a man to death. Firings are not enough. Indictments and arrests are not convictions. As we’ve done in the past—with George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and others –we will stand by this family until justice is done. A conviction sends a message that to the nation that cops cannot hide behind their badge after committing a heinous action like this.”

The funeral will be held at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, located at 70 N Bellevue Boulevard in Memphis on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 10:30 a.m.

In addition to Reverend Sharpton, civil rights attorney Ben Crump will also be in attendance to deliver a call to action.

Reverend Sharpton joined scores of clergy leaders on Thursday for the African American Faith Leaders convened by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

“In such a milestone year for civil rights, it is tempting to celebrate the progress we have seen in the past six decades. But the truth of the matter is that we cannot afford to be so caught up with celebrations that we do not seize the opportunity to act upon the reality: that the threats to our democracy and civil liberties are at historic levels, and Black Americans continue to bear the weight of,” said Reverend Sharpton during his remarks. “It is in this spirit that the African American Faith Leaders Summit has been convened. In 2023, it is quintessential that as Black faith leaders and justice advocates, we have the support of our elected officials to continue the work of dismantling structures that stand in the way of equity, safety, and wellbeing for all Americans.”

In addition to Reverend Sharpton, Reverend A.R. Bernard, pastor of the Christian Cultural Center was a speaker among others, including Senator Raphael Warnock and Senator Chuck Schumer.

“The African American Faith Leaders Summit was an incredible event that brought together national and New York faith leaders to foster deep lasting partnerships that will strengthen our communities,” said Senator Gillibrand.“I’m proud that inspiring leaders like Senator Schumer, Senator Warnock and Reverend Sharpton can meet with many of New York’s most important faith leaders.Houses of worship form the backbones of our communities and I was excited to hear directly from local leaders about how I can best serve them as we enter the new Congress.”

Maserati MSG Racing fought to the top 10 in the second leg of the 2023 Diriyah E-Prix, with Edoardo Mortara finishing ninth at the Riyadh Street Circuit.

One day on from a challenging opening race at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Monegasque marque returned to form, and extracted positive pace in qualifying to build growing momentum.

Both Edo and team-mate Maximilian Günther launched their efforts from Group B, and although Max fell shy of the duels, Edo slotted into the top four to progress to the Quarter-Finals.

Here, the Swiss-Italian racer faced off against Jaguar’s Mitch Evans and qualified seventh after losing out to the Kiwi over the one-lap head-to-head. Max, meanwhile, secured 10th.

At the start of the 39-lap affair, both drivers made positive progress, and while Edo advanced to fifth on lap one, Max snatched ninth by overtaking Stoffel Vandoorne on lap nine.

From here, the duo settled into a consistent rhythm, although Edo lost ground on the 21st lap after being passed by Jake Dennis and Sam Bird.

A Safety Car on lap 27, caused by a collision for Nico Müller, disrupted the team’s intended strategy and a return to green flag running on lap 31 left a 10-tour dash to the chequered flag.

Edo and Max used both of their Attack Modes during this time, and unfortunately slipped down the order on the final lap to finish ninth and 19th.

The FIA Formula E World Championship’s ninth season will resume on February 11, with a maiden outing in Hyderabad, India.

“After a difficult weekend, it’s nice to get some points on the board, although we’re still a long way from where we want to be. Delivering a good result in qualifying was key to our performance today, and Edo was super sharp on lap one to get fifth after starting from seventh. Max also did a great job to make up some ground and was in contention for points throughout. We were able to keep good pace with the leaders in the early stages, but with the bunched-up field, it was very difficult to time our Attack Mode activations. The Safety Car then made that even more complex and unfortunately, with the increased pace, it was difficult to make many inroads ahead. It’s been a challenging two days for everyone in the team, but I’m immensely proud of how everyone has pulled together. We took clear steps forward this weekend, and if we keep digging, I know that we can achieve the results I know we’re capable of.”
