Parenting Tips During COVID-19

While this summer may look different than you and your family imagined, it can still be a happy, healthy time for growth and positive development. The Children and Screens network of experts is here to help you have the best summer possible with tips for managing summertime with your children and tweens on- and off-screens.

Read on for details, and be sure to tune in to the next “Ask The Experts” interactive webinar series brought to you by Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development this coming Friday, June 5th, at noon EDT, when an esteemed panel of experts will talk about how to navigate this unique summer with your school-aged children and teens and answer your questions via Zoom. RSVP here.

The workshop will be moderated by Dr. David Hill, a national authority on Child Development, Hospital Pediatrician at Goldsboro Pediatrics, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UNC School of Medicine, and the author of the new book Co-parenting Through Separation and Divorce.

  • FIND A BALANCE
Kids thrive in environments that help regulate their sensory systems—sight, sound, touch, hearing, taste, smell, vestibular, and proprioceptive, among others—because it makes them feel calm and ready to learn. Understand that kids may be using media devices to help regulate sensation when ordinary supports like playgrounds and resource rooms are unavailable. Instead of viewing media use as inherently problematic, work with your child to explore other environments, inside and out, that support their sensory regulation so that media use is just one of many options available to them.

  • KIDS PITCH IN
Parents need help around the house, and children need variety, so take this summer as an opportunity to show your kids how to pitch in. Cooking, cleaning the car, watering the plants – these all give your child a sense of purpose and new skills they’ll need as they grow up. Plus, it provides a welcome hand for overburdened parents and guardians!

-Susan Tapert, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Director, Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development, UC San Diego.

  • KEEP IN TOUCH
As your child progresses from early to middle childhood, peer interactions become even more important. Peer relationships help children develop important skills like cooperation, conflict resolution, emotional management, perspective taking, creativity, and identity presentation. Even if your family is social distancing, encourage your child to engage with other kids. This can be through video chat (e.g., Zoom, FaceTime, Skype), online games (e.g., Minecraft, Roblox), walkie-talkies, or even talking across fences or through windows. Children need social interactions, and peers are important social partners. Even if parks and camps are limited or closed, social interactions should still be encouraged, and the thoughtful use of technology can help facilitate them.

-Stephanie M. Reich, Associate Professor of Education, University of California, Irvine.

  • GO OUTSIDE
Strangely enough, stay-at-home orders seem to have reminded people how important it is to get outdoors. Being outside is generally regarded as safe, so long as basic public health guidelines are still observed. Playing in nature promotes curiosity, initiative, and creativity, and it’s a great way to take a break from the screen. The Children in Nature Network (CINN) provides resources for parents and guardians who want to promote exploration and unstructured play in backyards, parks, and other wild spaces during the pandemic. With many local and state parks starting to open back up, families can take advantage of this opportunity to instill a lifelong interest in nature.

-Jayson Seaman, Associate Professor of Outdoor Leadership and Management, University of
New Hampshire.

  • ENCOURAGE EXPLORATION
It is important to remember that learning happens through interaction with our environment. We learn through what we do. Letting children come up with ideas important to them, avoiding prescribed activities, taking time, and being patient provides space for creativity to emerge. Whatever the activity – whether a walk in the woods, drawing a picture, experimenting with a recipe or what might seem like just fooling around- letting kids, particularly young ones explore in unstructured ways helps them understand their world and cultivate deeper interest.

-Stephen Uzzo, Chief Scientist, New York Hall of Science and Adjunct Professor, Teaching and Learning, New York Institute of Technology Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

  • EXPECT AN ADJUSTMENT PERIOD
Your child has been using screens to fend off boredom, but that’s not all. Screens are an easy way to distract ourselves from all those uncomfortable feelings during a pandemic: Disappointment. Sadness. Anxiety. Fear. Annoyance. Anger. So be sure to build in antidotes, like daily roughhousing, to help kids work through emotions. And you can expect a certain amount of volatility from your child as they begin spending less time with screens, so ratchet up your patience level. But after this transitional time period, you’ll see your child becoming less irritable and aggressive. You’ll notice more initiative, self-discipline and focus when they play. And best of all, you’ll see your child developing their inner life and discovering who they are by playing, learning and engaging with the world, instead of losing themselves to a screen.

  • USE YOUR TOOLS
Families can find a great tool to help them have a screen-use discussion with their kids by checking out the interactive Family Media Use Plan
at HealthyChildren.org. Not sure how much time your kids really have? Would it help to have some visuals? It’s all there!

-David L Hill, Hospital Pediatrician at Goldsboro Pediatrics, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UNC School of Medicine, and the author of the new book Co-parenting Through Separation and Divorce.

  • DETOX FROM SCREENS
Consider setting aside a full day (perhaps Saturday or Sunday) as screen-free time. If you can’t commit to a day, at least try a designated evening. This regular break allows children to do a “screen detox” and creates a void to be filled with other activities. Not a bad routine for the whole family to do together.

-Daniel G. Shapiro, M.D., Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics

  • FAMILY FUN WITH MEDIA
When you do watch media, make it a family affair. We know from research that when children and caregivers watch screens together, children are more likely to learn from what they are viewing. So, bring out the popcorn and have a special movie night, or designate some time during the day when you can sit down and watch educational media together to help make it a positive experience for kids. Children are more likely to learn from what they are viewing if you direct them to specific content (“Elmo is red”) and make it relatable (“that car is blue, we have a blue car too!”).  For older children, you can get them talking or thinking about what’s on the screen by asking engaging, open ended questions (“The dragon seems upset, why do you think that is?”). When family screen time is over, try to engage children in offline activities that get them playing or moving, to help keep their brains and bodies healthy.

-Sheri Madigan, PhD, Clinical Psychologist, Canada Research Chair in Determinants of Child Development, Associate Professor, University of Calgary and Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute

“Just as resources have been recently prioritized to the transition from work to home,” says Dr. Pamela Hurst-Della Pietra, President and Founder of Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development, “for the foreseeable future, parents need to explore new avenues and adapt their child-rearing techniques to best serve their children’s needs in an uncertain and challenging milieu. It is a lot of ask, especially with fewer outside resources, less time, near constant change, circumscribed opportunities and, on top of it, the constant allure of screen time for everyone, but the payoff is worth the extra effort. We are here to support parents in coping with the new reality.”

But I also hope it instills in the next generation a love of magic and sense of wonder for what is possible in the world.”

Southern Halo New Video

Southern Halo Debuts Animated Lyric Video, “Don’t Let Another Day Go By”

Southern Halo has been running short teasers of their new “Don’t Let Another Day Go By” lyric video on TikTok, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram this week, and the song’s positive message is resonating with fans. The new video premieres today on the duo’s YouTube channel here.

Production was on hold for a time due to social distancing restrictions, but Nata and Tinka bounced ideas around and came up with the concept of using animation as a work-around. “It was perfect for this piece,” notes Nata. “The format itself is fun,” observes Tinka. “And makes for a great fit with the positive message of the song.” The duo reached out to Katrina Kinder Blair of DiamondBack Productions to tackle the project and she delivered with her trademark attention to detail and eye for design. For Blair, portraying the “little moments” was key, and she incorporated those cues admirably. Images of various road signs are used to “guide” the viewer along, and the sisters are portrayed road-tripping down the highway – and stopping to smell the flowers along the way.

Slow down
Let go
Breathe it in, go with the flow
Put the pause on “want it all”
Take the time to make that call
Break down
That door
Try to love a little more
And while you’re learning how to fly
Don’t let another day go by (N. Morris / C. Downs)

“Don’t Let Another Day Go By” is impacting radio as well, moving to #63 on the MusicRow Country Breakout Chart this week. The single is also popping up on multiple popular Spotify playlists, including Pop Country, Texas Country, Camping Playlist and Drinking Songs. Written by Nata Morris and renowned composer/producer Cliff Downs (Foreigner, The Judds, Gary Morris), the track is available for fans to stream from Spotify, Apple / iTunes, Amazon, and Google.

In addition to their new single, Southern Halo has teamed with FriendlySky and launched a four-part virtual concert series, Hangin With Halo. The first show (May 22) streamed live from The Cotton House in Cleveland, Mississippi. Plans for the next show are underway now, but the duo has stayed busy in the meantime, with social takeovers of Country Sway, Guitar Girl, The Country Note, Nashville Meets World, Backstage Pass, Center Stage Magazine, Road Dog Media, and dozens of radio stations’ Facebook pages.

About Southern Halo
Jeff Cook of Alabama fame produced the (then) trio’s debut EP in 2014. The Morris sisters next teamed with hit songwriters Gerald O’Brien and Catt Gravitt for two full-length projects in 2015 and 2018. The latter, Just Like In The Movies, generated two Top 25 hits on the MusicRow Country Breakout Chart with “Anything Is Possible” and “I Think Too Much.” Using each project as a stepping stone, the siblings embarked on multiple radio tours, extended U.S. performances and three tours to the UK. Their finely tuned stage shows have earned them spots at CMA Fest, Bluebird Café, Grammy Museum Mississippi, and Grammy Museum Los Angeles, among others. Extensive high-profile media coverage helped push Southern Halo into the spotlight, and they’ve shared the stage with Maren Morris, Old Dominion, Randy Houser, Easton Corbin, Brantley Gilbert, and legends Dionne Warwick and B.B. King. Originally from Cleveland, Mississippi, Nata and Tinka now call Nashville home.

Ruha Benjamin x Deepening Social Inequality

From everyday apps to complex algorithms, Ruha Benjamin cuts through tech-industry hype to understand how emerging technologies can reinforce white supremacy and deepen social inequity.

Far from a sinister story of racist programmers scheming on the dark web, Benjamin argues that automation has the potential to hide, speed, and even deepen discrimination, while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to racism of a previous era. Presenting the concept of the “New Jim Code,” she shows how a range of discriminatory designs encodes inequity: by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies, by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions, or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Moreover, she makes a compelling case for race itself as a kind of tool – a technology designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice that is part of the architecture of everyday life.

This illuminating guide into the world of biased bots, altruistic algorithms, and their many entanglements provides conceptual tools to decode tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold, but also the ones we manufacture ourselves.

Future of Film During COVID-19

The experience of making or watching a film in a cinema is all about groups of people coming together to collaborate on art. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing. “The German film industry came to a halt in March, says Mariette Rissenbeek, Executive Director of the Berlin International Film Festival (BIFF). That is, “all stages of the film business, exhibition, production, financing- cinemas closed down, film and tv production was stopped.”

Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian (Artistic Director, BIFF) joined C.M.Rubin, Founder of CMRubinWorld, to talk about movie-making and movie marketing during a pandemic. “Everyone is looking for the right way to respect COVID-19 restrictions on set without damaging the film,” says Rissenbeek.

Rissenbeek and Chatrian are focused on joining forces with cinemas to strengthen the power of cinema. “It is too early to judge whether ‘normality’ will return to the cinema on a short or mid-term. It is likely we will have to cope with restrictions for the next 8 or 10 months,” adds Chatrian.

National Day of Fasting

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is calling for a National Day of Fasting and Focus on Monday to call Americans to repent of systemic racism and turn toward the work of building a more just and loving society for all people.

Bishop William J. Barber II, campaign co-chair and president of Repairers of the Breach, said the campaign seeks not merely a fasting from food, but also a national fasting from systemic racism, systemic poverty, the denial of health care and from other death-dealing policies.

“We must dedicate ourselves to breathing life into our Constitution and its promises and refuse to accept a civility that covers up injustice,” Bishop Barber said. “The very life of our democracy is at stake. Not the democracy that is, but the democracy that could be.”

The upheaval in the country has shown the power of social justice movements, said Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, director of the Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign.

“People across race, across geography, across age have seen that we cannot be silent anymore,” she said. “It is only when the people organize in radical and bold ways that we can build a society that actually takes care of the needs of the people.”

The campaign is asking people to stand still wherever they are at 5 p.m. , Monday, June 7, and be still and focus for eight minutes and 46 seconds — the amount of time that an officer held his knee on the neck of George Floyd, killing him on Memorial Day. They will then be asked to read a litany that the campaign will share on social media.

After that, Rev. Barber will speak to the nation from Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where he is the minister.

People should also remember Ahmaud Abery, who was shot and killed by armed white men as he jogged in Georgia in February and Breonna Taylor, who died in March after she was shot eight times by police who used a battering ram to invade her apartment. As a sign that our collective repentance is real, people will also be invited to dedicate themselves to stay engaged, to vote, to hold elected officials accountable and to work for a moral agenda that addresses historic wrongs and policies that perpetuate inequality.

On Sunday, June 6, the campaign will hold a national interfaith service to recognize the more than 100,000 Americans who have died from COVID-19, especially poor and low-income workers. While President Trump wants to divert attention away from the pandemic and to his misinterpretation of protests in the streets, the Poor People’s Campaign will insist that the country doesn’t forget those who died.

The service will be co-led by Revs. Barber and Theoharis and Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Imam Omar Suleiman and Valerie Kaur.

Antifa Exposed

In light of recent events, Project Veritas today released a video exposing the violent nature of the controversial group known as antifa.

“Depending on the setting, if I were to be caught or found out in a setting where I am present with them, it could escalate to violence against me,” said the Project Veritas Undercover Journalist.

“Project Veritas does not condone any violence whatsoever. It is a sad time in our nation’s history with Antifa activists hijacking #blacklivesmatter protests in cities across the country, attacking the police and engaging in violence,” said Project Veritas founder and CEO, James O’Keefe.

“In many places, it appears the violence is planned, organized & driven by anarchic left extremist groups — far-left extremist groups using Antifa-like tactics.”

Antifa is short for anti-fascist. The group has long claimed a leadership role in violent movements across America and the world.

“They do not hesitate to either push back or incite some kind of violence. In our classes and in our meetings, before we do any sort of demonstration or Black Block, we talk about weapons detail and what we carry and what we should have,” said the Project Veritas Undercover Journalist.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump said the United States would designate “Antifa” as a terrorist organization. National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien echoed Trump’s comments Sunday morning, saying the violence “is being driven by ‘Antifa.’”

Attorney General William Barr announced in a statement that he will enforce action against the group, saying “violent radical elements” are hijacking legitimate protests to “pursue their own separate, violent, and extremist agenda”.

About Project Veritas:

James O’Keefe established Project Veritas in 2011 as a non-profit journalism enterprise to continue his undercover reporting work. Today, Project Veritas investigates and exposes corruption, dishonesty, self-dealing, waste, fraud, and other misconduct in both public and private institutions to achieve a more ethical and transparent society. O’Keefe serves as the CEO and Chairman of the Board so that he can continue to lead and teach his fellow journalists, as well as protect and nurture the Project Veritas culture.

Project Veritas is a registered 501(c)3 organization. Project Veritas does not advocate specific resolutions to the issues raised through its investigations, nor do we encourage others to do so. Our goal is to inform the public of wrongdoing and allow the public to make judgments on the issues.

Josh Richards Launches Clothing Line

TikTok star Josh Richards is using his influence to advocate for change.

Influencer and TalentX Entertainment co-founder Josh Richards is launching his new line of clothing and accessories: a brand called Buddy’s Hard in partnership with Moby Dick Unlimited. The launch will kick off on Wednesday, June 2nd at 3 p.m. EST.

As a social media creator, Richards is aware that the responsibility he and his peers carry has never been greater – especially during a time such as this. In an effort to use his influence to push for positive change, Richards is offering an exclusive “Buddies Stronger Together” hoodie for the first 72 hours after the kickoff, with 100% of his proceeds from the hoodie sales to be donated to the NAACP.

Richards and the rest of the team at TalentX Entertainment hope that his fans will step up to support equality with a “Buddies Stronger Together” purchase.  “Together we are stronger; together we are unbroken; together we can do anything,” he said. TalentX CEO Warren Lentz profoundly agrees. ”The folks at TalentX are excited to partner with Josh and Moby Dick Unlimited to use his influence for good and fight for equal rights,” he said. “Influencers carry a massive responsibility with the sway (pun intended) they have in society and Josh doesn’t take that lightly!”

“Now is the time for influencer merchandise to make an impact in the world and not just be another revenue stream,” said Moby Dick Unlimited CEO Brandon Fuss-Cheatham. “We are proud to work with TalentX and Josh Richards in implementing this philosophy and spearheading this movement.”

The new shop can be found at shopjoshrichards.com.
