Harvey Stein is an internationally renowned street photographer. His work spans Mexico to the United States, Italy, India and many other places. His most recent book titled “Mexico Between Life and Death” explores the idea of a culture living in a state of limbo. He travelled to numerous cities throughout the course of 14 trips in 18 years to complete this thorough body of work.
During his presentation at the Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington DC, Stein discussed his particular style and the photographic techniques that he uses to tell stories in his work. He was specific about his straight forward approach towards photographing his subjects to express stark emotion. Stein photographs people head on and without smiles to present a natural and whole form of humanity, without filter. He uses compositional elements, the placement of people, shapes, and 2D vs. 3D planes to create images that challenge the eye. Additionally, his use of film provides another layer of genuine expression in his art.
Stein made the point that although he travelled to Mexico for almost a decade for this series, he does not know Spanish. This did not hinder his ability to interact with his subjects.
The Switzerland-based luxury camp experience specialists of Amazing Escapes announce the grand opening of Kachi Lodge, the first luxury dome lodge on the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia. Located at the foot of Tunupa volcano at an altitude of 11,800 ft, Kachi Lodge rises out of Bolivia’s Altiplano like a surreal space station. Intentionally designed to offer stellar views of the world’s largest salt flats and the star-studded sky, the interiors have a minimalist setup that embraces the landscape’s natural setting. Whether an adventure seeker or astrophysicist, guests will be mesmerized by the Kachi Lodge’s 6 luxury bedroom pods and oversized lounge dome set up on the wooden deck above the dazzling surface of the Salar. The individual pods offer guests the comfort of a hotel room with a private bathroom, plush and cozy bedding and stylish interior decoration.
Guests of this otherworldly lodge are invited to dine in a central dome filled with cozy lanterns and oversized hemp cushions that add to the dramatic ambiance. Kachi Lodge takes great pride in delivering authentic and inventive cuisine, partnering with the award-winning Gustu Restaurant and school in La Paz. The team has established strong relationships with its local suppliers and aims to showcase the great potential of the country’s production, culture, and biodiversity.
The staff, which includes a camp leader, a chef and bilingual activity guides, goes above and beyond to satisfy creature comforts and truly create a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Kachi Lodge is passionate about providing guests with new and unusual ways to discover the already popular Uyuni Salt Flats.
The high-tech, all-in-one water system provides running hot and cold water and simultaneously recycles it in a closed loop, minimizing consumption in a system that is virtually self sufficient. Kachi Lodge is a low environmental impact structure and in addition to the water treatment unit working in a closed loop, all of the systems are powered by solar energy only.
Gaston Ugalde, the most well-known contemporary artist in Bolivia, has created unique pieces of art that are installed throughout the Kachi Lodge as well as outdoor art installations on the Salar that are also available for sale. In his work, Ugalde engages the Bolivian landscape, as well as plants and fabrics intrinsic to traditions within Andean culture, and transforms them into contemporary collages, photographs and installations that speak of commerce, politics and spiritual disconnectedness. By combining the history and geography of his country with creative intervention and juxtaposition, he is able to pose universal questions to his audience about their connection to humanity.
Rates start from $1,980 per person based on double occupancy and include a two-night stay, airport transfers, activities, and full board by Gustu. Kachi Lodge is located on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats. The closest airport is 60 miles away from the lodge through the flats, and a two-night minimum stay is required.
A royal jewel, 30 carat pearl brooch is set for auction at Christies in Geneva Switzerland on May 14th. The Ana Maria pearl was a gift of King Charles V of Spain to a noble family and where it remained for generations. Using cutting edge radiocarbon analysis, the Swiss Gemological Institute (SSEF) confirms the age of the pearl—something unheard of previously. The laboratory is happy to speak with you.
Jewels with fabulous royal provenance are currently trending at auction. Sotheby’s set a record for pearls at auction in 2018 with the $36 million dollar sale of the Marie Antoinette Pearl.

THE ROLLING STONES ARE COMING TO CHICAGO IN JUNE
CELEBRATING THE 55th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROLLING STONES 1st RECORDING SESSIONS AT CHESS
Willie Dixon’s Blues Heaven Foundation
presents
A WORLD PREMIERE EXHIBITION
THE ROLLING STONES AT CHESS
PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ROLLING STONES AND VINTAGE MEMORABILIA OPENING JUNE 5th at 6 PM
2120 S. Michigan Ave.
Chicago
The band has yet to officially announce when the U.S. tour shows will be rescheduled. However, if
you live in or near Chicago, or will be visiting in June for the Chicago Blues Festival in early
June,TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE!
Blues legend Willie Dixon’s Blues Heaven Foundation, which occupies the hallowed ground of the
world famous Chess Records building, at 2120 South Michigan Avenue, in association with Bob Bonis
Museum, Miami and Gallery Schuster, Berlin, are thrilled to announce THE ROLLING STONES AT
CHESS – a World Premiere Exhibition celebrating the 55th anniversary of the first time the Rolling
Stones recorded at Chess.
The exhibition will feature over 50 photographs, many of them unpublished and never seen before
by the public, from these historic recording sessions. There will also be photographs of the Stones
at the Palmer House hotel on their second visit to Chicago in November 1964. Historic collector
memorabilia will also be on display.
The photographs were taken by the late Bob Bonis, an accomplished photographer who also served
as the U.S. Tour Manager for both The Rolling Stones and The Beatles from 1964 through 1966
beginning with both famous bands’ first ever tours of America.
Limited edition portfolios and prints of photographs will be available for sale, with a portion of the
proceeds going to the Blues Heaven Foundation and their efforts to restore the recording studio in
the historic Chess Records building.
The association between the Rolling Stones and the city of Chicago and Chess Records is one of the
most important in the bands’ history and was the spark that connected its founding members,
leading to the formation of the band in 1962. Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones was a Blues
enthusiast who idolized Blues masters such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and other Blues masters
from Chicago.
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, childhood friends, ran into each other on October 17, 1961 on the
train platform in Dartford, England. Keith, carrying his guitar, noticed that Mick had some record
albums under his arm, Rockin’ at the Hops by Chuck Berry, and The Best of Muddy Waters. Keith
learned that Mick had mail-ordered these albums directly from Chicago’s Chess Records, as they
were unavailable in England. Later they saw Brain Jones playing slide guitar (considered the first
British guitarist to play this style of Blues) and they soon joined forces and the Rolling Stones were
born.
During their first-ever tour of America, Phil Spector helped the Rolling Stones book to record at
Chess on June 10 and 11, 1964 where they met several of their heroes, including Muddy Waters,
who helped them carry their equipment into the studio, and Chuck Berry, who stopped by to
eavesdrop on their recording session, giving them his stamp of approval.
On their second and third tours of America they returned to again record at Chess, on November
10, 1964 and in May of 1965. No photos of those later session are known to exist. Bob Bonis’
photographs from this first visit to Chess are among the only known to exist and will be displayed
at the Blues Heaven Foundation for the entire month of June, 2019.
Larry Marion, curator of the Bob Bonis Archive, a renowned memorabilia expert, will be offering
free appraisals of any vintage Rolling Stones, Blues or other memorabilia during this exhibition.
EVEN POP STARS GET BULLIED – SODY SHARES HER STORY IN NEW SINGLE
Sporting long blonde hair, blue eyes, and pink sweater, SODY is not your conventional victim of bullying and has since turned it into a positive and personal experience by becoming a vocal advocate for anti-bullying in new single “The Bully.” PRESS HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO
Featuring a range of unenthusiastic schoolchildren posing for their school photos, “The Bully” presents itself as an ode to anyone picked on or feeling alone. “For my sanity, I needed to try to move on and find the positive in a negative situation to accept what happened and move on,” SODY told Celeb Mix. “I found my way to heal in the lyric ‘I’m glad it happened to me and not to you,’ and I hope it helps others find theirs too.”
Known to speak bluntly and honestly, SODY expresses raw emotion that allows audiences to relate. “It’s always going to be hard to show that vulnerability and be honest about yourself but the more people that show their authentic self, the more people will be confident to do so,” SODY told Thomas Bleach.
With a passion for standing against injustice, bullying and hate crime, SODY is just beginning to use her platforms to highlight the issues she cares about and plans to keep addressing these passions to help make the world a little less mean one song at a time.
Fine Wine Importer Maritime Wine Trading Collective Celebrates 10 Years
Embarks on a National Tour (May 13th – 31st)
Chris Nickolopoulos founded Maritime Wine Trading Collective in 2009 along with great friends from Graham Beck of South Africa and Jules Taylor Wines from New Zealand. With their help, as well as many others, Maritime’s business has grown from a small handful of family-owned wine producers to a national portfolio marketed in the US, as well as internationally.
Pictured: Maritime founder, Chris Nickolopoulos, r, and co-founder Elijah Pfister
With an eye toward greater market relevance beyond imports, Chris and his co-founder, Elijah Pfister released their first négociant wine from the Russian River Valley in 2010. What followed was a string of successful bottlings and releases, which ultimately resulted in the acquisition of Nine North Wine Company based in Napa. In 2013 Maritime established distribution operations in California. And then opened the doors to the tasting room, Maritime Wine Tasting Studio, in 2015.
Asked for his thoughts on the 10-year milestone, Chris du Toit, President of Graham Beck states, “Our relationship with founder and managing partner at Maritime, Chris Nickolopoulos, which goes back more than 12 years has been enormously rewarding. We are thankful for his personal dedication and wish him and the Maritime team a happy anniversary, and much success going forward.”
Jules Taylor and husband, George Elworthy, of Jules Taylor Wines echo the sentiment, “We look back with pride that we have grown together to arrive at this point via combined effort, acumen and Maritime’s thoughtfully-curated portfolio. All of us at Jules Taylor Wines are excited to see what the next decade of this collaboration and friendship will bring.”
In reflecting on the past ten years with Maritime and 25 years in the industry, Chris observes, “It can be fairly stated that almost everyone in this crazy trade has great wine to sell, but at the end of the day it’s the people who make all the difference, and I am grateful for the longstanding relationships and true friendships that we’ve made over the years. I thank all of our producers and the team at Maritime for a great first decade and hope people come to see us during our celebratory tour: great wines will be tasted, and new friends will be made.”
This month, Chris and Elijah kick off a four-city tour, to showcase their Nine North portfolio. Along with them will be Pieter Ferreira, Pierre de Klerk, and Edwin Olivieri of Graham Beck Wines; Jules Taylor of Jules Taylor Wines and George Elworthy of The Better Half.
May 13th – 17th New York and New Jersey.
May 20th – 24th Chicago.
May 28th – 29th Dallas/Ft. Worth and Houston.
May 30th – 31st Austin and San Antonio.

About Graham Beck
Graham Beck was founded in 1983 and the family-owned winery has become one of South Africa’s leading and best-loved cellars as well as an internationally recognized sparkling wine producer. The Graham Beck Cap Classique collection of wines include Non-Vintage Brut, Brut Rosé and Bliss Demi Sec; Vintage: Blanc de Blancs, Brut Zero and Brut Rosé, and the iconic Cuvée Clive.
About Jules Taylor Wines
Jules Taylor Wines emerged in 2001 as a little moonlighting project making a mere 400 cases. Five harvests, two children and many awards later, the project had grown some serious legs. Still family-owned and operated by Jules and her husband George, Jules Taylor Wines is firmly rooted in Marlborough.
About The Better Half
When George Elworthy decided to dust off his winemaking hat to create a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from Marlborough, a friendly rivalry arose. His wife, Jules Taylor, is also a winemaker with her own well-established brand and so The Better Half seemed like the perfect tongue in cheek moniker to attach to his new project.
About Nine North Wine Company
As circumspect négociants, Nine North Wine Company proprietors, Chris Nickolopoulos and Elijah Pfister, have exclusive access to wines from top-notch California wineries and vineyard plots. They blend and finish various lots that they feel overdeliver for the price point and are geared toward every day enjoyment. Nine North includes such brands as Twenty Bench, Rock & Vine, Chasing Lions and Lan-Yap Rosé.
