Global Business Hit Hard by Rising Energy Costs

Zurich, Switzerland: Research shows that businesses around the world remain concerned about the impacts of energy security and prices, which could be a catalyst for a range of environmental, social, and economic ripple effects. According to the ABB Energy Insights survey 1 of 2,300 leaders from small and large businesses across a range of sectors, 92 percent of respondents feel that the continuing instability of energy is threatening their profitability and competitiveness. Energy costs and insecurity are having a significant impact on the workforce with decreased investment in employees. Business leaders are also concerned about potential impacts on them meeting their sustainability targets.

Restricting business investment and growth

Rising energy costs and security are forcing business leaders to rethink how they operate and where they invest in their businesses, to stay competitive, let alone grow. The key impacts on businesses due to rising energy costs in the last year include lower profit margins (34 percent) and cuts to spending in some areas (34 percent), leading to a shift away from investment in R&D and other business growth initiatives. Over a third (38 percent) have or plan to reduce technology investment, while a third (33 percent) expect to cut spending on infrastructure and 31 percent foresee a decline in marketing spend.

Impact on employees

Businesses say they have reduced investment in their workforce in the last year because of increased energy costs and the need to implement mitigation measures and expect this to continue over the next three to five years. Three of the top five business areas highlighted for budget reductions are related to the workforce: 42 percent will spend less on recruitment; 38 percent will decrease spending on salaries, overtime and bonuses; and 37 percent will reduce investment in staff training and development.

Delaying decarbonization

Respondents further cite concerns that energy pricing and insecurity could delay progress on climate change, with carbon reduction commitments considered less of a priority than reducing energy costs. Over half (58 percent) of business leaders surveyed said the cost of energy could delay achieving their sustainability and carbon reduction targets by anywhere from one to five years. While reducing energy costs is the top priority for 61 percent of companies, only 40 percent are currently prioritizing reducing carbon emissions.

Energy security

83 percent of business leaders express concern about the security of their business’s energy supply, and many are taking action to address energy insecurity and fluctuating energy prices. Over a third (36 percent) are worried about further rises in energy costs, 31 percent are concerned by power cuts and blackouts, and a quarter by energy rationing. In response, 34 percent have already put in place energy efficiency measures and 40 percent are looking to install on-site renewable energy generation to become less dependent on the grid.

Morten Wierod, President, ABB Electrification, said:

Businesses say they need to insulate themselves from energy prices and insecurity and are re-evaluating current and future spending plans. Taking action to mitigate this is a clear priority, but this doesn’t have to be a catalyst for potential workforce or environmental impacts. Investing in smart and sustainable on-site renewables and energy efficiency technology means businesses can simultaneously cut costs and reduce their emissions. With the right approach, it is possible for industry to achieve cost savings without sacrificing competitiveness, workforces or the journey to decarbonization.

Taking action

While businesses want to take concrete actions to address energy challenges, a third are being put off by the perceived cost of implementing energy efficiency measures, and almost half (49 percent) feel they don’t have the know-how or resources to proceed.

Much of the technology that can help businesses – large or small – to optimize their energy management and reduce costs, is already widely available and at a reasonable cost. For example, at a telecoms HQ in Hanoi, smart building technology reduced energy costs by 20 percent, while retrofitting hardware and using energy management solutions at an ABB factory in Italy has led to 30 percent energy savings.

To find out more about how ABB and our customers are collaborating to mitigate energy challenges, visit Sustainability in Electrification. Businesses can also join the ABBEnergy Efficiency Movement–a global forum of over 300 organizations sharing ideas and solutions that can help industry lower costs, mitigate energy challenges and accelerate climate action.

Paragon FX Group replica of batman's bat radio via 360 MAGAZINE.

Paragon FX Group

New York- Pop-Culture aficionados are ecstatic to have an opportunity to add “grail” items to their collections thanks to Paragon FX Group. Dorothy’s ruby slippers and the 1966 Batman’s Bat-radio are two of the most recent museum quality items offered by the collective of artisans.

Many screen used props are far outside the reach of most collectors, while the picture perfect recreations from Paragon FX Group are accessible for fans.

The Ruby Slippers are arguably one of the most legendary items in film history. Using the latest reference from the Smithsonian and exhaustive private study, Paragon has painstakingly produced what is believed to be the most accurate replica pair of Ruby Slippers to date. Every sequin, every gem, even the orange felt on the soles has been recreated by their  team of prop makers and engineers. Adam Savage of Mythbusters fame called them “Absolutely gorgeous!”

The Bat-radio, as seen on the 1966 Batman series, is instantly recognizable by fans and has also been lovingly recreated by ParagonFxGroup.com. The original props were hand cut and adorned with collapsible brass antennas. A simple light, denoting transmission, was the only other feature present on the original models. Paragon’s staff spent months studying the history of the original props, and their recreation is fabricated of cast resin, acrylic, and brass. The replica features a lights and sound option and has a satisfying weight that adds to its real-world feel.

Upon viewing Paragon’s recreation, James Zahn, Editor-in-Chief of The Toy Book said “For decades, millions of kids have wondered how they can have the same Bat-gadgets that Adam West and Burt Ward used to rock the streets of Gotham City as Batman and Robin. While this Bat-Radio replica won’t be able to broadcast a signal from here to Egghead’s Lair, it’s an essential piece of any Bat-gadget collection.”

Film enthusiasts interested in learning about Paragon FX Group’s upcoming projects can learn more HERE.

ABOUT PARAGON FX GROUP

Paragon FX Group is comprised of established prop makers, collectors, artists, and engineers with decades of industry experience. Every item is recreated through an exhaustive study of the original. In some cases, a given piece may be lost to history and must be rebuilt from film study, while others are reverse engineered directly from the original prop. The end result is a museum quality replica of the artifact as seen on screen.

Of the song, Oladokun shares, “When my friends and I started ‘We’re All Gonna Die’ we were most shocked at how nihilistically joyful it is. Death is a dark and difficult subject for most people, including myself. This song is about facing the fear of head-on and acknowledging that we’re all guessing what the best way to live is. I love that it highlights a sense of humor that both Noah and I have that people may not always pick up on in our music.”

“We’re All Gonna Die” is the second song unveiled from Oladokun’s highly anticipated new album, Proof of Life, which will be released April 28 via Amigo Records/Verve Forecast/Republic Records (pre-order here). Ahead of the release, Oladokun recently unveiled album track, “Changes,” of which Billboard praises, “features the singer-songwriter’s vulnerable voice floating above tender acoustics as she reflects on kinetic shifts, both global and personal…her voice a relaxed balm on a steady beat.”

With production by Oladokun, Mike ElizondoIan FitchukDan Wilson and Alysa VanderhymProof of Life captures the human experience with a profound simplicity. Across these thirteen tracks, Oladokun celebrates the little details and simple pleasures of being alive, while also giving voice to some of life’s most complex experiences in a way only she can. In addition to “We’re All Gonna Die” and “Changes,” the record features previously released songs “Keeping The Light On” and the instant-classic duet, “Sweet Symphony” feat. Chris Stapleton, as well as collaborations with Manchester OrchestraMt. Joy and Maxo Kream. A special deluxe edition of the album will also be available on CD and vinyl April 28 featuring three additional tracks: “Purple Haze,” “Spotlight” and “Flowers.”

“This album is evidence of how I live,” Oladokun shares. “I hope these are helpful anthems. I started making music because I wasn’t hearing from the ‘everyday human being’ on the radio. I hope this resonates with anybody who feels normal and needs a little musical boost to get through the day. I’m average. I do this job because I love what I do. I put so much care, craft, and intention into it. I’m making music to live to.”
One of music’s most unique and vulnerable voices, Oladokun, will join John Mayer and Noah Kahan on their respective sold-out tours this spring and summer. See below for a complete tour itinerary.
