People For Statement on FBI Search at Mar-a-Lago

Following news that FBI agents executed a search warrant at former president Donald Trump’s Florida home, Mar-a-Lago, today, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The search of former president Trump’s home is a very serious matter. We do not know what evidence the FBI was seeking at Mar-a-Lago, but we do know that obtaining a search warrant requires a judge to have determined there is probable cause to believe there is evidence of a crime at the location being searched, and is unprecedented in the case of a former U.S. president. We also know that the National Archives discovered months ago that the former president mishandled classified documents by removing them from the White House to his Florida home, and that there have been numerous reports of his mishandling classified material while in office. The bottom line is this: tonight’s news reaffirms that in our American democracy, no one is above the law. That includes Donald Trump, even if his behavior often suggests he believes otherwise.”

People Mourn the Loss of LGBTQ+ Activist James Hormel

Following the news of the passing of longtime People For board member, LGBTQ+ advocate, and the first openly gay U.S. Ambassador, James Hormel, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous and People For the American Way Founder Norman Lear released the following statements:

“Jim was a true hero, so full of courage, humor and generosity,” said People For President Ben Jealous. “As a longtime board member of People For the American Way, he understood that building power among young people was critical to the future of our democracy. Jim was a truly kind and lovely soul, and his loss will be felt deeply. Our hearts and prayers are with his husband Michael and their extended family.”

“I loved Jim Hormel deeply,” said People For founder Norman Lear. “Through the years he was an incredible asset to People For the American Way, a provider of ideas and insights and deep understanding. He was also a fighter, passionate about so many issues we hold dear, from voting rights to free expression and the fight against censorship. I will miss him tremendously.”

People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! Radio in Iowa

People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! Program announced a Spanish-language radio ad buy in Iowa, focused on Senator Joni Ernst’s failures, disastrous record on health care, the importance of protecting Iowans with pre-existing conditions and the call to vote her out in November. People For’s Latinos Vote! program was one of the first groups to air Spanish-language ads about Ernst’s record.

“Seguro médico,” a 60 second ad, which began airing last week, will air several times a day, through October 25, across the state on Spanish-language radio stations including stations in Des Moines, Sioux City, and Cedar Rapids.

The ads begin airing amid growing concern about the lack of outreach to Latino communities during this 2020 presidential election cycle. There are an estimated 32 million eligible Latino voters nationwide and an estimated 67,000 eligible Latino voters in Iowa, which represents 3 percent of all eligible voters in the state–enough to turn the tide in a state where polling suggests both Joni Ernst and Donald Trump are losing ground. This year Latino voters will be the largest racial or ethnic minority participating in a presidential election. Only 12.65 million Latino voters went to the polls in 2016.

“For nearly four years, Latinos in Iowa have watched Joni Ernst stand behind Donald Trump’s hateful, bigoted policies and rhetoric while simultaneously working to dismantle their health care,” said President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous. “Now, in the midst of a global pandemic, Joni Ernst has indicated she will vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett, a notoriously anti-health care judge, to the Supreme Court. Enough is enough. These ads are a reminder of what another term with anti-health care, Trump-enabling Joni Ernst looks like.”

“Latinos in Iowa and across the country, who have felt a disproportionate impact from the coronavirus pandemic, count on their health care”  said People For the American Way board member, civil rights and labor leader Dolores Huerta. “Joni Ernst has worked with Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, end protections for pre-existing conditions, and make it harder for Iowans to get the health care they need. It is time for her to go.”

RADIO SCRIPTS

English:

Raquel: Pablo – I’m worried about dad’s healthcare insurance. He has pre-existing medical conditions and the Republicans don’t seem to care about covid! He’s not up to date with his medications and he could get ill with the virus! Little brother, we have to do something!

Pablo: Raquel I know. Republican Senator Joni Ernst has failed us so much. She values money and her millionaire friends more than the community. She voted against people with pre-existing medical conditions … all to make more millionaire friends.

Raquel: That’s why we have to vote for Teresa Greenfield because she will advocate/fight so that all of us have access to healthcare in order to have medical insurance for our families. Have some spirit little brother! To improve things, we must vote for Democrat Teresa Greenfield for the Senate!

PFAW x Enough of Trump

People For the American Way and Amsterdam News, the oldest Black-owned news business in the country, are excited to announce the completion of a major public art installation on the exterior of the Amsterdam News’s historic Harlem building.

The installation includes images from prominent artists participating in the Enough of Trump campaign, including some of the most influential Black and Brown artists in the country. The installation, which includes a permanent 30’x 70’ mural by world-renowned artist, Carrie Mae Weems, covers the full front facade and north facing wall of the Amsterdam News headquarters at 2340 Frederick Douglass Blvd, New York, NY. It also features pieces by artists Shepard Fairey, Beverly McIver, Amalia Mesa-Bains and Angelica Muro.

“Today, we are three weeks away from the most important election of our lifetime and for a historic Black newspaper to blanket their building in Enough of Trump art, in the middle of Harlem, sends a clear message to the nation and the world that people have had enough of Trump,” said PFAW President Ben Jealous. “The issues driving the mostly Black artists and artists of color who are participating in the Enough of Trump campaign, include his continued mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, his blatant racism, and his unconscionable encouragement of violent and deadly policing. We are really excited that the historic Amsterdam News is supporting artists participating in the Enough of Trump campaign.”

“Art has always been an influential tool in creating social change,” said Amsterdam News Publisher Elinor Tatum. “That’s why I’m thrilled to partner with People For the American Way and its Enough of Trump campaign at this critical time. Given the stakes in this historic election, it is more urgent than ever to inspire voters to transform their dissatisfaction over the increased polarization of this country, and the racism that this administration is perpetrating, into votes on Election Day.”

“America is at a tipping point,” said artist and project curator Carrie Mae Weems. “Either we move forward by electing Joe Biden, or we continue to regress with four more years of Donald Trump. It is that simple. Our hope is that this project serves as a reminder to residents of Harlem and Americans everywhere of the bigotry, hate and corruption brought on by four years of Donald Trump and the importance of voting him out next month.”

The national Enough of Trump campaign, which is a project of PFAW, features work from 17 different artists whose pieces are being shared on multiple platforms. The campaign’s mission is to motivate people to share what they have had “enough” of in the Trump era, and to get out and vote in November.

The campaign’s focus is on battleground states but its scope is national. In addition to the Amsterdam News art installation, PFAW recently announced “Enough” themed billboards in Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin, and Michigan locations, with more to come.

The ENOUGH of Trump campaign website features a full gallery of artist images as well as a store for purchase of ENOUGH art, prints, and collectibles.

Latinos Vote! Program Encourages Biden-Harris Ticket

Today, People For the American Way’s Latinos Vote! Program, in partnership with Win Justice, announced a six-figure, Spanish-language radio and TV ad buy in both the Reno and Las Vegas media markets focused on increasing Latino voter turnout to support the Biden-Harris ticket in the crucial swing state of Nevada.

The Spanish language radio and TV ads begin airing today and run through Election Day. The ad buy contrasts the Trump’s leadership with the Biden-Harris ticket, and highlights a number of pertinent issues for Latino voters in Nevada, including Donald Trump’s failure to act on the COVID-19 pandemic, the resulting economic impact felt by Latino communities, disproportionate COVID-19 infection and death rates in Latino communities, and instructions on how to safely vote by mail.

Watch the TV ad here.

Listen to the audio for the radio ads here.

Ad scripts are below.

There are an estimated 32 million eligible Latino voters nationwide and 328,000 in Nevada representing 17 percent of all eligible voters in the state. This year Latino voters will be the largest racial or ethnic minority participating in a presidential election.

“It’s simple: Donald Trump needs to go because Latino families and immigrant communities cannot have another four years of dysfunction, delusion and disinformation that puts their lives at risk,” said President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous. “Under the Trump administration, life is worse for tens of millions of Americans. And the people who have felt the brunt of Trump’s racism and xenophobia are our loved ones, neighbors and friends. As voters, we have the power to change the future of this country.”

“When we talk about Latino voters, we are talking about Americans that have disproportionately felt the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their health and in their pockets,” said People For the American Way Political Director Lizet Ocampo. “The reality is that Donald Trump abandoned Latino families in favor of cages for kids, ripping apart families. Trump’s absurd policies and abject failures disproportionately impact Latino communities and Latinos in Nevada must know that the only solution is to vote for the Biden-Harris ticket in November.”

“In election after election, Nevada has seen the power of the Latino vote, and we are committed to ensuring every Latino family has the tools they need to cast their ballots safely and securely,” said Win Justice Nevada State Director Gabriel di Chiara. “This year the opportunity to Vote By Mail will keep our families and communities safe while ensuring they can make their voices heard this election.  Our partnership with People For the American Way will help the Latino community in Nevada vote Donald Trump out of office and send Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to victory.”

“Many Latinos in Nevada and across the country have paid with their lives – or have lost their lives due to Trump’s failed leadership and failed administration,” said People For the American Way board member, civil rights and labor leader Dolores Huerta. “Women and Latinos are still the groups most infected by COVID-19 in Washoe County. Now, during the worst pandemic we’ve seen in one hundred years, under Donald Trump’s failed leadership, Latinos, especially immigrant families, have been left abandoned. Every eligible Latino voter must stand for justice and toward a future that respects all of us. The only way to do that is to vote for Biden and Harris.”

Win Justice is a group of leading progressive organizations, including Color Of Change PAC, Community Change Action, Planned Parenthood Votes, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), formed to expand the electorate by mobilizing at least three million voters of color, young people, women, and union supporters in four key battleground states: Florida, Minnesota, Nevada, and Wisconsin. Win Justice will be particularly focused on the impact of vote-by-mail on historically marginalized Black, Latino, and Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and will engage these voters so they exercise their right to vote.

In Wisconsin, Latinos are changing the course of history. We removed Scott Walker, the Republican governor who didn’t care about our community. At the beginning of this year, our vote won state elections regardless of all obstacles. We have shown that our vote has power. Let’s vote for a leader with experience and a strong vision for our future. Let’s vote for Joe Biden.

In Wisconsin, Latinos are changing the course of history.

We removed Scott Walker, the Republican governor who didn’t care about our community. And earlier this year our vote won state elections despite the challenges and obstacles we faced.

We have already shown that when we organize and vote, we all win.

But there is still a lot to do and we need to make sure our voices continue to be heard.

We cannot wait for things to change, we need to vote.

This election we must elect a leader with experience, dedication, and a strong vision for our future and that of our families. Let’s vote for Joe Biden. This is a message from Voces de la Frontera Action.

Partners with Pearl Jam’s Vote-by-Mail Initiative Release Exclusive Face Masks

Today, in observance of National Voter Registration Day, People for the American Way, in partnership with Pearl Jam in their “PJ Votes 2020” initiative, are announcing the release of exclusive, limited edition “Vote” masks by women owned business and change makers Resistance By Design.

People For the American Way, along with Resistance by Design, and several progressive organizations, officially joined Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Pearl Jam’s Take-Three Pledge Initiative on September 9, to encourage their fans to join them to “Vote by Mail, Recruit Three Friends and Don’t Wait in this general election.”

People For is actively pushing for election security during the 2020 election season, as well as safe, secure voting alternatives, including voting by mail, to help ensure that all eligible voters can cast their ballots.

“In what is decidedly the most important election of our lifetimes, People For is doing everything in our power to get as many Americans to vote as possible,” said President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous. “We hope that the release of these masks, in observance of National Voter Registration Day, is a reminder to Americans of the power their vote can have.”

“This unique partnership is a testament to the importance of this moment in time to the future of our nation and democracy,” said Alex Posen and Dahna Goldstein co-founders of Resistance by Design. “As purpose driven artists and business women we are proud to join with Pearl Jam, one of the biggest bands of all time and People For, a leader in democratic advocacy, to get out the message and get out the vote. This mask may cover our mouths, but together we are raising our voices in partnership to change the future of our country.”

Resistance by Design inspires civic engagement through the intersection of art and fashion by creating thoughtful designs that empower everyday activists and amplify social justice movements.

Pearl Jam has had a long history of activism and political involvement dating all the way back to 1992 when they hosted the free “Drop in the Park” concert in Seattle that registered thousands of voters. For nearly three decades, the band has played in countless benefit concerts, been outspoken advocates for progressive causes, and raised and donated millions of dollars to local and global non-profits personally and through their Vitalogy Foundation. Pearl Jam was active in the 2018 general election in its Rock2Vote initiative, which registered thousands of voters in Montana and secured commitments to vote.

Carl Reiner Honored and Remembered

People For the American Way extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of comic genius Carl Reiner, who died Monday night at the age of 98. Reiner was an award-winning producer, director, and actor who took the responsibilities of citizenship seriously.

“Reiner served in World War II to defeat fascism. He was grieved by the election of Donald Trump and encouraged Americans who felt the same way to vote in 2018 and in 2020.

“‘In my 96 and a half years, I have seen a lot of things,’ Reiner said in an October 2018 video encouraging people to vote. ‘But the one thing I cannot bear to see is America being destroyed by racism, fear-mongering and lies. Fortunately, there is something we can do about that.’

“‘On November 6, we can vote for elected officials who will hold this president accountable,’ he continued. ‘And after we’ve done that, my personal goal will be to stick around until 2020, and vote to make sure we have a decent, moral, law-abiding citizen in Washington who will make us all proud again to live in America.’

“Carl Reiner did not quite make that goal of sticking around long enough to cast his vote to replace President Donald Trump. But his determination to do so will add to our own determination to mobilize Americans who share his disgust at the ‘racism, fear-mongering and lies’ that he feared were destroying the country he loved.

“Reiner was a longtime friend of People For founder Norman Lear and supporter of the organization. He and his son Rob frequently attended People For the American Way events.”

Alliance for Justice Telebriefing

Reminder: Briefing Call at 11 am ET TODAY:  Leading National Rights Organizations Assess Two Years of Trump’s Harm to Courts

TO CALL IN:

Phone number: 888-224-1121

Confirmation code: 6759700

Please join the conference 5-10 minutes prior to the start time.

Today at 11 am ET, Alliance for Justice and People For the American Way will host a joint telebriefing to discuss their respective studies of the first two years of President Trump’s impact on federal courts and the federal judiciary.  The call follows the release earlier today, at 9:30 am ET, of new reports by the organizations: AFJ’s “Trump’s Attacks on Our Justice System: President Trump, the Federal Judiciary and the 115th Congress,” and PFAW’s “Confirmed Judges, Confirmed Fears: The Continuing Harm Caused by Confirmed Trump Federal Judges.”

The AFJ report is a comprehensive look at the disintegration of the judicial nominations process under Trump, which has led to the nomination and confirmation of numerous individuals with histories of opposition to key legal rights and protections for workers, women, people of color, LGBTQ Americans, immigrants, and more. You can read the report here.

An audio recording of the call is available here.

The PFAW report builds on the organization’s ongoing research project, “Confirmed Judges, Confirmed Fears,” and provides compilation and analysis of the rulings of Trump judges following their confirmation. It offers a stark illustration of the ways in which these judges have—as predicted—brought narrow-minded, elitist agendas and views to the federal bench and have harmed people’s rights. You can read the report here.
