Can people steal your money over the phone?

Hey, it’s just a phone call, right? Nothing can happen, right?

Wrong.

Just because you can’t see the person on the other end of the line doesn’t mean they can’t steal your money. In fact, there are a whole host of ways that scammers can get your hard-earned cash, and it’s all done over the phone. Let’s take a look at some of the worst ways that people can steal your money over the phone. You’ll then be prepared if you ever get a call from someone trying to scam you.

Tricking You Into Paying For Something You Don’t Need

The first way that scammers can steal your money over the phone is by tricking you into paying for something that you don’t need. This is often done with services that are supposed to be free, like credit card counseling or debt relief. The scammer will promise to help you get out of debt for a fee, but in reality, they’re just pocketing your money and doing nothing to help you.

Never pay for something that is supposed to be free. If someone calls you and offers to help you with your debt, hang up the phone and call your credit card company or bank directly. They will be able to help you for free.

Pretending To Be From a fake Charity

Some heinous individuals have no scruples. They’ll call you up and pretend to be from a fake charity, asking for donations. They might even say that they’re calling on behalf of a legitimate charity, but they’re really just pocketing the money themselves.

Even if the person calling you is a charity, which is doubtful, do not give them your credit card number over the phone. Hang up and look up the charity’s website. You’ll be able to donate directly to them without giving away your personal information.

Paying For Fake Prizes or Gifts

Another way that scammers can steal your money over the phone is by promising you a prize or gift if you pay a fee. This is often done with lottery scams, where the scammer tells you that you’ve won a large sum of money. They’ll then ask you to pay a small fee to collect your winnings. Of course, there is no prize and the scammer will just keep your money.

You can avoid this scam by never paying to collect a prize. If someone calls you and says you’ve won a contest or lottery, do some research You can even use a reverse phone lookup service to see if the number is associated with any scams. If it is, hang up the phone and don’t give them any money.
You can also usually find information about legitimate contests and lotteries online, so you’ll be able to quickly see if the call is a scam.

Charging Your Phone Bill Without Permission

Sometimes, scammers will find a way to charge your phone bill without your permission. This is often done by signing you up for a premium service, like a horoscope hotline, without your knowledge. The charges will then show up on your phone bill, and you’ll be responsible for paying them.

Always be careful about giving your credit card information or phone number to someone over the phone. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, there’s no way to be sure that they won’t use your information to steal your money.

Posing as a Legitimate Business

One of the most common ways that scammers steal people’s money is by posing as a legitimate business. They’ll often call people and pretend to be from a bank or government agency. They’ll then ask for personal information, like your social security number or credit card number. Once they have your information, they can use it to steal your money.

Never give out your personal information to someone who calls you out of the blue. Almost no one legitimate will call you and ask for your social security number or credit card number. If someone calls and asks for this information, use a reverse phone lookup to find out who they are and then hang up the phone.

As you can see, there are a number of ways that scammers can steal your money over the phone. Be sure to use caution if you ever get a call from someone you don’t know. A little bit of suspicion can go a long way in protecting your hard-earned money.
