“Ashton Travis has the buttery vocals that could make just about anything sound appealing.”

“Armed with a sharp, melodic set of deliveries, the liveliness and determination behind this offering act as an unbreakable foundation for Travis’ career.”

ABOUT ASHTON TRAVIS:
Ashton Travis is from the best city in the world. He knows he’s biased, but the charming poet-turned-singer from Houston, TX is more than sentimental about his hometown—he has the facts to make his case. “Houston has a strong style and culture, from music, to food, style, the cars we drive, and some of the most beautiful black people in the world; We’re champions in sports, and we put out legendary music acts from DJ Screw to Beyonce to Ashton Travis,” he boasts. To Ashton, being from Houston means having an ear for “slow, loud and banging” beats oozing from the stereos of unhurried cars on gravel roads—vehicles affectionately known as slabs. In that regard, Ashton’s sound is uniquely Houston. You feel it just as much as you hear it, his catchy, soulful melodies over atmospheric production firmly rooting him within a legacy of music talent from the city.

Born to parents from Guyana and Antigua, Ashton was a curious kid with a wandering mind. His father brought him to barbershops where he would see the old school Cadillacs and hear the bass-heavy chopped and screwed hip-hop so quintessential to Houston. Growing up in their Seventh-day Adventist household, Ashton went to church every weekend and followed the Sabbath. With friends, he played basketball, rode bikes along the bayous, and made pseudo professional mixtapes that they would burn to CDs and pass around. A poet at heart, Ashton was a member of the city’s National Poetry Slam team and grew up writing stanzas before turning his focus to lyrics. After watching his cousin make beats on Fruity Loops, he was encouraged to write raps.

For Ashton, his curiosity was rooted in a desire to see the world. Ashton went to Howard University, making a name for himself on campus before dropping out to pursue music full-time. His wanderlust took him to Los Angeles and New York City, but forging a path as an artist wasn’t without its challenges. Fast forward to today, and Ashton is more confident than ever in his gift. A self-described overthinker, Ashton’s songs explore the complexities of relationships and the depths of his mind, from dreams to aspirations, fears and insecurities. “I want people to empathize because I feel like I’m empathizing through my music—I’m talking not just for myself,” he says.

Ashton’s debut EP Almost There is born from the perspective of someone seeing life with new eyes. “Since that day, it’s like I’ve been reborn or something,” he says about a recent encounter with death that shed new light on his life. Single “Death Row”, an excavation and release of inner demons left unaddressed, speaks most clearly to Ashton’s newfound outlook. “I’ve overthought a lot of things and I’ve held myself back from different opportunities because I’ve been living in my mind, worried, focusing on what could be,” he confesses. “With the music I have now, it just feels like a collection of songs that scream I’m here, I’m alive, I’m happy to be alive, and I’ma talk about shit that moves my spirit, hoping that it moves the next person’s spirit that listens to it because we ain’t got all day. We could be dead tomorrow.”
